Jan 3, 2016 9:17 AM in response to Miss_SCby Grant Bennet-Alder,since I upgraded to El Capitan...
ElCapitan has a new requirement for add-ons that include extensions. They MUST be properly signed by the developer, or they simply do not get loaded.
Check with Paragon to be sure they certify that their utility and driver are ELCapitan compatible. Many are not, and it has been a rude shock.

Jan 3, 2016 9:25 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby Miss_SC,Could this happen all of a sudden due to my upgrading it? That's the only thing I have done differently. If not - is there a way to get my files off my hard drive onto a compatible version, or is it a case of buying the full programme... SeaGate say I only need this particular one - Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X -because I only have the SeaGate device so don't need to full package - this is the bit I upgraded today. I've seen this a LOT since ElCapitan launched. There is nothing wrong with the device, I've only had it a few months and hardly put anything on there - but what is on there IS MY BACK UP as I was trying to clear room off my Mac - so can't wipe it! Why is this so hard?! Plug a device in, save your files et voila... instead of downloading add on after add on to get it to work!

Jan 3, 2016 9:32 AM in response to Miss_SCby Miss_SC,I don't have the full version - this is on their site - but I don't want to buy it yet in case this isn't what I need? Sorry I have absolutely no idea about this stuff...?! If I buy this package - will my SeaGate device work?

Jan 3, 2016 9:59 AM in response to Miss_SCby Grant Bennet-Alder,If you had asked here earlier, readers would have suggested you use Ex-FAT for Mac and PC compatibility, or GUID with MAC OS Extended format for Mac-only use. Changing formats now does require you to erase the drive, which you said you do not want to do.
The Mac can Read, but not Write, Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) drives. Utilities such as paragon NTFS add that capability by installing an Extension.
ElCapitan adds a new requirement that those Extensions be properly signed with an Apple developer certificate, so many older versions of things with Extensions stopped working when ElCapitan came out.

Jan 3, 2016 10:01 AM in response to Miss_SCby Grant Bennet-Alder,That does appear to be "the right stuff" to buy to get your drive talking NTFS in ElCapitan.

Jan 3, 2016 10:20 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby Miss_SC,That was the one Seagate recommended - thank you for your help! I'll download it now - if it works I'll you you know

Jan 3, 2016 10:45 AM in response to Miss_SCby Miss_SC,Bought it (£12.99 in UK) - it's worked! hurrah! Hopefully that will be the end of it now I've bought it, as they should keep it up to date to run with El Capitan!
Anyone else having trouble - the Paragon software is the one SeaGate recommend. Can verify it works
it's this one... https://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/

Jan 3, 2016 11:37 AM in response to Miss_SCby pmiles,Honestly you really should consider reformatting the drive in ExFAT if you intend to share it between OSes. It's natively supported by both OSes and you don't need a third party to make it work. Right now you are at the mercy of the third party vendor to maintain support, with ExFAT there is no such baggage.
My Windows drive (bootcamp) is in NTFS because is has to be. My Mac drive (OS X) is in Mac OS Extended because it has to be. My shared drive (third physical drive) is in ExFAT because that is all it's used for, sharing data between the two. Works beautifully. I can read and write to my shared drive from either OS whenever I want to and I can access that same content from either OS whenever I want to.

Feb 2, 2016 9:05 AM in response to dmc28by lllaass,System Profiler should identify both the disk and the enclosure. Your screenshot only shows the enclosure.
That means:
- The disk is dead
- There is something wrong with the enclosure, or
- the drive is not getting enough power. That not infrequently happens for HDs that are powered by the USB bus (via a separate AC power adopter), especially a USB 2 (or 1) bus

Feb 4, 2016 8:01 AM in response to lllaassby dmc28,thank you for replying
is there anything i can do to fix it ? -
Feb 4, 2016 8:16 AM in response to dmc28by lllaass,Is the external drive powered by the USB bus?
Only small (use 2 1/2 inch drives) can be bus powered. Ones that use 3 1/2 inch drives are all AC adopter powered.
