Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

As of current, the only recall for Macbook Air is the 2013 for flash drives. There is a class action lawsuit that was started in 2014 over this issue, but as of now nothing has been determined.

Very familiar story, after looking at other people experiences, the very sad thing is that Apple look to be completely un interested, My sons  MacBook Air purchased in Canada Logic Boards gone 6 months out of date, the store told me if we had purchased in UK they would have repaired FREE however non EU £355 and no flexibility and to be honest no help this is clearly some kind of manufacturing fault, they told me to try and go back to the store in Canada, " Customer Service" thank god for EU laws for people purchased in EU as you would clearly expect  a product costing hundreds or pound to last longer than 18 months, Apple running away from customer care.

Hey Guys, Add one more on the list I had purchased a mba last year, everything seemed like was going good until last week, it just refused to wake up from sleep mode, called apple care they helped me with a few way to reset smc and nvram, unfortunately the care exec gave up and he suggested me to drop of at nearest Apple service centre, went drlopped it off thinking it will be some minor issue and will be rectified. Next day they call me up and inform that mba logic board has choked and needs to be replaced. And the approximate cost is 42000 inr around $800, just when I thought couldn't get any worse. It's a serious issue now and needs to be sorted, I hope apple recalls these mbas from 2012 to 2014 after investing 1400$ it's very disheartening and disappointing to know Apple wouldn't care. Come on it's not some dodgy brand that chokes in a year. Someone atleast file a petition to get this sorted. Cheers

My Macbook air 13" 2013 suddenly start working slow like ****,  and i noticed that its cooling fan also not running.

I got it to Apple service centre (NGRT SYSTEMS INDIA), they informed me about Logic Board failure issue, now i have to pay INR 43K.

But i wont buy any apple product from now.  Even wont recommend it to anyone.

I bought this costly (90k)laptop because of trust on apples reliability but i am disappointed.  There are many Brands which are cheaper and reliable compared to apple.

    Hello all,

Same problem with my 11 inch MBA, 2014 model. What is the best thing to do now? ( India ). I am obviously not shelling out the INR 38K quoted. Can I sell this off somewhere and get back some money? Thanks!

add one more victim here. This is actually the second time it's happening to me. Got my 13" MBA around September 2014 and within a month the logic board died and I got it repaired for free under warranty. Forgot to purchase AppleCare before it ended and my MBA decided to die last week. Whenever it sleeps for too long, it just crashes and turns off completely. The booting sequence get to 100% but just got stuck there. Brought it to the service center and they quoted for 128  for diagnose and a further 600-1k+ for replacement. Granted that I should have purchased AppleCare but surely this is a manufacturing problem that needs recall!. How can logicboards break so easily twice within 1 and a half years? This laptop is not cheap by far So disappointed in Apple as I always thought that their products were of the highest standard. Please think twice about purchasing a MBA.

Apple, you have another very unhappy customer here.
I've been a dedicated Apple user since more than twenty years. I've been praising your product quality to all my acquaintances and beyond.
But know clearly quality has been forgotten, as I can see here that I'm not the one being sold a defective unit.
It is absolutely unnerving to end up with a dead computer that you invest in. I've no problem paying for quality, but it has to last more than 18 months (my old white Macbook last for 8 years of intensive use).
I hope something will be set up to tackle this problem.

We have had a spate of logic board failures at our school just recently, about 4 in all.  All are about the same year of MBA purchased between 2012-2013.  I really hope @apple recognizes this is a serious issue and that it is not normal.

Another one with the same issue...

I purchased MBA in mid 2013 a 13in MacBook Air 1.3GHz i5 4Gb RAM from apple store. As no one told me to purchase extended warranty i was also least bothered to buy it, because i trusted Apple that nothing can happen to it. One day MagSafe was not charging it in mid of 2015 i took it to service centre they told that there is the problem with MagSafe. So i purchased another one. Now everything is fine but the charging point gets heated. i took MBA and MagSafe to service centre they took it for one day and mailed me a quotation of Rs 50000 INR. for replacing MLB as everything is working fine battery is also getting charged, how can they say that there is problem with MLB, i asked them whether to pay for this or buy a new one, they only told that go for a new one. Now after a research i came to know that same problem is with you all also. Now i am waiting that when my MBA will die forever because its a huge amount to pay just for a repair. I wonder if i go for a full repair for my MBA it will cost me somewhere around Rs 200000 INR for a Rs 96000 INR MacBook.

I am very disappointed with the service and the quality of parts.

Please help me anybody if you can because it was my 1st Laptop and MacBook and if dies i will never go for apple product neither i will suggest anyone to buy apple products.

"no one told me to purchase extended warranty..."

As an educated consumer, and an adult, it's not up to anyone - except you - to decide what you should purchase.  As I've posted before, things break randomly.

Just an update on my Macbook air - emailed Tim Cook and customer service got back to me and they agreed to repair it without cost. They will replace the logic board - which broke - 2 months after the warranty ended.

But then, more fun logic board times!

My Macbook Pro 17" 2011 got a new logic board in March under the recall of logic boards (I bought the macbook air to replace this one when it died in November). I haven't used this computer much since it was repaired and was grateful to have it as a backup. 6 weeks later? The new logic board on this one dies. It is now, once again, a brick. Lifespan of the replaced logicboard = 10 months (but only 2 months of any kind of regular use).

Considering my work is primarily in communications and I don't run anything much more than Office and Creative Cloud, this is appalling.

I'm going to be picking up a non-Apple laptop as soon as possible, since I trust this 'free logic board replacement' not to last more than a year.

So to sum up - I have bought 2 Macbooks over the last few years. None has worked more than 18 months.

I experience the same problem. My MacBook Air 13" broke barely 2 months after the 1 yr warranty. I bought it in Nov 20, 2014.

I experienced sudden shutdown in the past week even at times when I'm using it. I brought it to an Apple Service center and they told me to observe for another week but just after 3 days it did not turn on anymore, It shuts down at night while it was on sleep mode. Brought it to the Apple Service Center again and I was told today the Logic Board needs replacement and it cost half the price of the new unit. I checked this site and found a lot of similar problem... Logic Board

Felt so disappointed....... still thinking if a replacement would last longer or could be just another year....
