Q: iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9.  After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never".  When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again.   When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed.  There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

iPhone 6, iOS 9

Spoke to Apple today, they said they know there is a problem for some users. Not good, if this was my IT team, I would have rolled back the change or have this as a P1 call.

I now cannot backup 2 ipads and my iPhone. Tried all of the above and spoke to two apple support people. I will update if we can progress any further but this is not great. Non of my devices have been backed up on the cloud in the last 7 weeks!

Fixed with a new way - iTunes!

Eventually, I successfully done with iCloud backup today. I have tried all of the above steps and recommendation from online many times since last September with iOS 9 update, but haven't succeeded. Every time I tried again when iOS was upgraded, including iOS 9.2 yesterday, but nothing had changed.

Hope many of you guys can solve this issue with this way below:

    1. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes.
    2. Backup your device manually on iTunes: [Manually Back Up and Restore] > [Back Up Now]. It may will take a few minutes.
    3. After completion, choose [Restore Backup...] then your device will be restarted and restore from your backups of step 1 above. It may will take dozens of minutes.
    4. Go back to your device, remove former iCloud Backups if exist: Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > Select your device that you are unable to backup and wait a few seconds. (Important: Backup Options should be loaded completely before you proceed – no spinning wheel).
    5. Try iCloud manual backup on your device: Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now.

    Good luck!

Automatic backups have resumed here, apparently by itself, or maybe not.

I had an issue with my contacts on the iPhone. (53 more than on the other devices and no syncing)

Removed the conflicting issue by switching of contact syncing in iCloud, removed all contacts and one day later contacts were synced all right and  backups resumed. Backups have been regular and consistent over the last few days.

Maybe this can help somebody else.

got a same problem - actually I noticed it because was going to buy iPhone 6s plus, so I was trying to create this backup to restore on my next phone

I found really nice solution - Meizu pro5, 2 times cheaper than iPhone, and a bit more powerfull with same design (iPhone clone)

Good luck to mr. Tim and R.I.P. Steve Jobs and Apple

And I regret upgrading to the new device and its terrible behavior. My old 4s was a work horse and did all the things right. Now, I can only back up manually to iCloud, the phone has weird hiccups, Apple Support Senior peeps stopped calling back about my Apple ID Verification pop up which happens when I power cycle or whenever it wants to and is a KNOWN BUG  but you won't read that anywhere - and the 6s loses wifi connectivity all the time. I'm stuck with it.

No fixes. Like it's my fault - even though we have tried all the things including setting up as new - the retail store handed me to Apple Care. And they no longer respond. At that point there's no one left. Me, and this phone that does not behave as advertised. For the price I paid... sigh.

Vote with your money, I do all the time. Until you do manufacturers will not understand. I just would never by some third party Meizu, I would go for Samsung, LG or Nexus (Motorolla). The graph above just shows that apparently people like Tim's products even more then Steve's. Look at the sales numbers.

This advice completely worked for me!! Thanks! It is worth the try for anyone that can't backup to iTunes. (I use a chromebook so there is not alot of storage for additional downloads and files on the device.)

I had the same issue many are seeing:

    - old 8.4 backup prior to upgrade

    - inability to backup to iCloud via WIFI ("could not be completed")

    - old 8.4 backup shows no data and can not be deleted on your iOS device

I've seen many solutions for folks with this same issue, found simply changing the name of my phone (settings>general>about) actually worked for me. It created a new full backup under the new phone name and for some reason, replaced the old backup that had no data.

    Good luck

After 12 weeks since upgrading my 4S to 9.0x and further, having a popping message "This iPhone has not been backed up for x weeks" from time to time I have looked into this. Tried this and that from the comments to make sure iCloud backup works again (it works for my son with his 5S), nothing really worked 100% but - for me it seems that the backup is actually done. What I have tried:

    1. Deleted the old backup. Before, total storage was 5GB, Available a little less. After they both were 5GB (which - if the numbers are correct - means the backup data was actually deleted).

    2. Tried "Back Up Now" with all data except Photo Library. It was taking ~10 mins, showed the progress bar, calculated estimated time, and finished with no error message. If I look at the result at the bottom of the "Backup" screen it was still saying "The last backup could not be completed  Last Backup: Never", and at "Manage Storage/Info" Latest Backup Never Backup Size 0 bytes.

But: when I look at the storage, it's Total 5GB, Available 4,2GB. Which means some 800MB (more or less what was my estimate adding together data volumes for 50+ apps) were used during the process, which looking at duration and no error message hints that some data has been written to iCloud.

Note: it also says in "Manage Storage/Info" Next Backup Size 107MB, and shows "Delete Backup" option at the bottom - which is not available right after you delete the backup).

So, the question for me now is - could this 800MB of data be useful when restored or not. If yes, it is less of a problem. I will spare some time for trying that in the (happy) New Year.

I have been having icloud backup problems for many weeks after updating to 9.1 and would have to hard reset the phone to get it to back up. It would work off and on for the last couple of months but now it's stopped backing up again.  Now I can't get it to back up manually or automatically even after a hard reset. I updated to 9.2 and changed the dns to googles but it still won't work. I am completely stuck with a phone that won't back up at all. Has anyone found a consistent solution to this problem?

So I only back up to iCloud, but because of this, I'm going to just use itunes. If I restore phone, since I'm not syncing with iTunes, how do my apps data get restored if I use the restore button in iTunes?
