Q: how to use audiobook homesharing in ios9

Hi, I just started using ios 9 (coming from 8.3). On my iphone, how do I listen to an audiobook that is on my mac through homesharing? In 8.3 you would select homesharing in the music app and it would share the mac music library with audiobooks included. But with ios 9, audiobooks have been moved to the ibooks app, and I don't see any option for homesharing there.

I'd appreciate some help if anyone knows. I really hope there's a way. I'd really hate to have to transfer audiobooks to my phone since they take up so much file space.

Thanks.

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.3

It would appear that you can't share audiobooks via Family Sharing.

This list of do's and don'ts don't mention audiobooks at all, but does specifically mention "Books from the iBooks store". I would call Apple Support for clarification.

    What you can share

If you turned on Share My Purchases when you joined Family Sharing, you can share most content that you purchased using your Apple ID. You can share:

    • Music, movies, and TV shows from the iTunes Store.
    • Books from the iBooks Store.
    • Most apps from the App Store.
    • Your Apple Music Family membership.

The availability of iTunes content and Apple Music depends on your country. To share apps, you need iOS 8 or later or OS X Yosemite or later.

    What you can't share

    • Songs added to iTunes Match from outside the iTunes Store.
    • Individual Apple Music memberships and other subscriptions, such as magazines and newspapers.
    • In-App purchases.
    • Items that are no longer available on the iTunes Store.
    • Items that you or another member of your family group has hidden. Learn more about hidden purchases.
    • Some apps from the App Store. Find out if your app is shareable.
    • Ringtones.

Thanks for helping me again, LAC!

Question though: Isn't family sharing different from homesharing? As I understand it, with family sharing you share content with different apple IDs within one family (people can download, etc.). With homesharing you can only stream content to devices using the same apple ID on the same wifi network. I use this feature a lot at home since all my content can't fit on my ios devices.

Yep. mea culpa... I misread your title.

Same result, different explanation I guess. From what I understand, Audiobooks are licensed differently from any other Apple digital offering. As in, once downloaded at purchase time, they can't be downloaded again. Even by the original purchaser. This is unlike music, apps and so on.

If that's the reason they were moved to books, I don;t know, but it may be. Having said all of that, they can be copied to a PC and synced via iTunes still.

I did find this article referring to iTunes 12 and iOS 8, but it should still apply.
