Q: Convert iPhoto Events to Photos Albums

I just installed Photos on my iMac.  I have taken a LOT of time making Events in iPhoto.  Is there a way for me to convert the Events I made with iPhoto into Albums for the new Apple Photos software?  It would take me a LONG time to make new Albums and then copy all the Event images into the New Albums.

Is there a way to automate this?

I have a question about the former Albums in iPhoto. In addition to all the events, on the right sidebar I had a number of albums. For instance, I make greeting cards out of my images and I had over 100 saved in a album called Cards. They are also scattered all over the place in events. What happens to all those albums as one transitions from iPhoto to Photos? I ordered a new iMac and will need to migrate everything to Photos. I'm worried I will lose all the info in these formerly named Albums. Trying to round them all up would be a real pain.

The photos will be distributed into various Moments based on their EXIF creation date.  So they only will be grouped in the Cards album that should have been carried over from the iPhoto library.

However, if you're concerned about having them ungrouped when you migrate to Photos select them all in the Cards album in iPhoto and create a new Event for them.  When migrated to Photos that Event will be be converted to an album and be located in a folder titled iPhoto Events in the sidebar of the Photos library.

This way you should end up with two albums of the same photos:  one in the iPhoto Events folder and the other just in the sidebar under Albums.

Thanks so much for your reply, OT.

I'm not sure I understand the above. If they come over intact as an album (or moment or whatever they want to call them) then that is great. But these cards were created over the span of about 3-4 years. Their originals are scattered all over in various events.

The other issue is that my iMac died. I am temporarily using a Macbook Pro until my new iMac arrives. For reasons I do not understand, this laptop will not open my iPhoto Library. My iPhoto app is on the laptop's HD, but all the images, the iPhoto Library itself, is on an Ext. HD. I don't know why it won't open it. I have the same OS on both (Mavericks) and had the same iPhoto version, which has now been updated to ver. 9.5.1. It's a big mess. I was just hoping that with Yosemite and the new Photos, it would straighten itself out. I sure don't want to lose all those images... almost 450gbs worth.

Thanks again. I'll wait until i get my new iMac and hopefully it will sort itself out.

Remember that the photos in album are only pointers to the real image file which are in the Moments.  Just like photos in Albums in iPhoto are only pointers to the real image file in the Events.  So if you delete the album the photos will still be in the library among the Moments.

I tried that.  When I right click on Events, my options do not include "move."

I Do understand that the albums in the current iPhoto are only pointers to the real file. This is why I am concerned that these iPhoto albums will not transfer to the new Photos intact. Since they are pointers, the real files are scattered over several years worth of events. With almost 450gb of images, it would take forever to round them all up again.

I Ordered a new iMac last week so I haven't yet seen the new Photos. The only experience I have with it is the Photos apps on my iPhone and iPad.

SInce I just purchased the new iMac I am eligible for the One on One program, and I think I will take advantage of it. Yes, I do know it's being discontinued but  if I sign up for it by the end of Sept. they will honor it for a year. After a year, I should have the iMac and all my other Apple devices set up.

I have a similar problem that I hope some of you obvious experts can help with.

    I migrated to Photos.

Set my IOS devices to sync with Photos. Also selectively not to sync the old iPhotos Events albums.

However,, each time I do an IOS upgrade, these events albums reappear on my iDevice. It happens both with my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. It happened both with Yosemite and El Capitan. I had even deleted the iPhotos Events folder in Photos.

Each time I do an IOS update, they reappear and I have to make a change to what is to be synced, do a sync, and set it back again just to get back to where I want.

    Help!

Yes, this puts all 125 of my iPhoto events in the new Albums area, but now they are in random order. How do I retain the proper order (as I defined it when I organized all these)? Fortunately I was able to "undo" this goof, but I'm still where I was, unable to add new photos to my system or drag them into new or old events. Any ideas?

By placing a number in front of the folder name haha

Photos moments is completely ********. I have many events with over a thousand photos in them and to not be able to collapse the moments down like events in iphotos is a real drain.

Mimicking the events folders in iphotos can be done by creating an events folder (as a new folder) and subsequent yearly folders (same as events folder, new folder eg 2008, 2009, 2010...2015) and THEN subsequent smart folders for months with date - is in the range (eg 1/1/2015 to 31/1/2015) and placing a number for the month at the beginning of the folder name (eg. 01 JAN, 02 FEB, 03 MAR...12 DEC haha like good old windows).

Moments easily collapse to collections or to years

This is a completely collapsed "list" view in iPhoto.

How do you "move my dozens of Events into Albums" (per Bamidbar)?? I've spent much time working/organizing my "Events" in iPhoto and I don't want to lose that work! i've been searching for Photos Tutorials but have found nothing specific enough to help!

Found an new app who certainly can help a lot of folks in this forum called Events Maker 2.0 (extension for Photos) from macupdate.com.

    55945.png

I have felt in love with this app myself. With a single click it gives you back the ability to create new events on Import just like in iPhoto!  And it even includes some convenient features like uploads folder from finder with subfolders intact and more.  Worth having a look.
