Have you checked with Microtek for updated drivers? If they don't plan to update their drivers, you could look at third party scanning software, such as VueScan.

VueScan support has indicated that since El Capitan, many of the Microtek scanners are no longer detected.

No, Apple doesn't create drivers for scanners.

Following the installation of El Capitan my Microtek S480 scanner failed to operate. I enquired with Microtek and received this answer. Not very helpful,

It seems the Microtek scanners with this chip are now redundant with El Capitan!!!!! They were great scanners and now I'll have to find another that will work with my iMac. Very disappointing.

    Email from Microtek:

    Dear Customer,

My name is David Lee, the technical support of Microtek in Taiwan ( Time Zone : GMT + 08:00 ).

It is sorry there is no Microtek scanner driver S/W, ScanPotter, can support ScanMaker s480 to work under Mac OS X EL Capitan ( 10.11.x ) system.

ScanPotter can not open and support ScanMaker s480 to work under Mac OS X EL Capitan ( 10.11.x ) system due to the scanner's main board included the ASIC chipset : SQ113A3.1 inside and list as below picture.

    Mail Attachment.gif

The image processing chipset : SQ113A3.1 is designed by the third party IC company and its scanner driver is offered by this IC company also. It is because this IC company is close for years, hence, our S/W engineer in MII RDC can not get the support from this IC company, modify the scanner driver and keepScanMaker s480 work under Mac OS X EL Capitan ( 10.11.x ) system.

Finally, thank you for your kind understanding.
    Sincerely yours,
    David Lee

VueScan has drivers for both these scanners, there is a free test available for download here:    VueScan drivers for Microtek

I've tried the VueScan software and it doesn't detect my Microtek S480.

Tried to install Scanwizard 5 (the only package available for OSX).

I get error notice: Unsupported ......

I think I'll have to give up and buy a new scanner.

    Thanks for the ideas.

    Email from Ed Hamrick:

El Capitan broke USB support for many Microtek

    scanners, including the s480.

For those with Firewire interfaces (such as the i900)

this is a good workaround, but unfortunatly the s480

doesn't have a Firewire interface so it can't be used

    on El Capitan.

    Ed Hamrick

A sad redundancy for my S480 scanner. Now the search for a new scanner!!!!! Frustrating!!!!!

    Hi Char,

It looks like you may be in with a chance. See email from Ed Hamrick, below.

Load Vuescan, test it and send the VueScan log to support@hamrick.com
