Q: Network connection between two Mac Pro's

Hello All,

I have a quick questions, I hope....

I have two Mac Pro's and both are connected the same network.  I have a connection from each going to a router and I've also connected a network cable between the two Mac Pro's using 192.168.x.x addresses.  My question is... Is there a way to get the Mac Pro's to only use the 192.168.x.x connections when communicating with each other?

My reasoning for doing this is the connection speed between them this way is a lot faster then going through a gig switch.  I've tested it multiple time.

I've changed the "Set Service Order..." in the Network Preference but that doesn't change.

Thanks in advance

When they are connected to your Router, they are only using the Switch function -- their data is not Routed. They are essentially communicating directly. But your Router must support Gigabit transfers, even if it cannot talk Gigabit over the Internet connection. (Apple Routers do support Gigabit ethernet.)

One explanation for the slower speed is if either computer is limited to 100BaseT. One surprising thing that can do this is a broken wire in a cable. You must have all eight wires in the cable, and they must be connected correctly to attain Gigabit Ethernet speed.

There is an instrument available to report ACTUAL speed -- it is Network Utility. If Network Utility.app it isn't found in your Utilities folder, look for it here:
