Q: Retina 5K - AMD Boot Camp Driver failure

I would like to begin a discussion of the Boot Camp Drivers for the AMD video card in the stock Retina 5K iMac.  There is a thread that demonstrates what appears to be a successful install of the drivers, and a thread that demonstrates a non-successful install.

A non-sucessful install looks like this:

ATI-bootcamp.JPG

The drivers tab indicates that driver version 14.200.1002.1002 is installed.

This is the stock Boot camp driver install.  The latest beta Catalyst drivers from the AMD website will also return the same results.

I have had conversations with Apple support and it seems there is no official support for Boot Camp after install.  They have no useful information beyond blaming Microsoft and/or AMD and acknowledging that there are threads at Apple communities that confirm people are having this issue.

For those of you with the Retina 5K, can you get the AMD Boot Camp drivers to function?  If so, what did you do to make it work?

Can you list your specific hardware load out?

I am not concerned about true 5K support in Windows, that is not the issue at this point.  The issue is that the AMD Boot Camp drivers will install, but Windows refuses to load them and returns a 'code 43' error.

    I've tried c:\users\Todd\Downloads\Bootcamp-031-13951\BootCamp\Drivers\Display\WT6A_INF

In that subdirectory there is a folder B295223

Two driver files: C0295241 and CU295241

Hope that helps.  I'll hold off on using the setup until I know these were the correct area to pull from or not.

The error isn't that the driver is bad or error 43 but that the driver selected for this device does not support this version of windows (Windows 10).

Update: created a restore point and attempted setup.  Claims that I tried to use a version of boot camp not intended for this computer model.

The setup.exe in the Bootcamp folder will not work. Use the one in the AMD folder.

    Peculiar:

    This PC -> Downloads -> Bootcamp-0131-13951 -> BootCamp -> Drivers -> AMD -> AMDGraphics Setup.exe

It installs seemingly just fine.  No problems.

But nothing happens.  The version on the Boot Camp USB drive that gives the Error 43 prompts for a reboot at the end of the install.

This one ends with no errors and Device Manager shows "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter."

There is no prompting for a reboot with this one (the one downloaded via Brigadier).

Rebooting Device Manager shows the same.  "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter."

I've got to be overlooking something.

Do you have any more ideas?

Can you clean up the driver store using pnputil and test?

You may need to boot in Windows Safe mode and try to clean up the driver store. You can also switch to the Generic Adapter and then try it.

I was able to remove the items from the driver store.

This time I installed the AMD package again and this time it completed but with warnings that was basically displayed no error message:

Again, I haven't rebooted but it still says "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" in Device manager.

I will reboot and see if anything changed but let me know what you think.

    Thanks.

I have confirmed there are no AMD drivers in the driver store so I am puzzled as to what might be stopping it this time.

Loner T - did you see my response to your initial post from some days ago:

This was what happened - I still do not have functioning video drivers:

It's doesn't works. I don't have problems with the driver installation by the recommanded method :

    Delete drivers. Windows update.

The drives is installed. The device is stopped.

You may want to enable device driver debugging and collect logs.

The log is your Event Viewer. I am referring to something similar to https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-drivers/develop/debugging_a_driver .

Still no luck - error 43.

I've looked at this thread from beginning to end and also read other threads from all over the internet from people who had this issue.  Oddly, some individuals had better luck starting over.

I actually updated to Mavericks this morning in the hopes there was a 6.0 Mavericks windows driver update but I figured that was a long shot.

Against my better judgement I'm actually going to start from scratch this time rather than beating my head against a wall trying to rescue the same windows installation and figure just starting from zero will be the best possibility instead of wondering if I did every step in this thread in the right order.

More once I actually finish the reinstall.
