Q: Item not available - this item cannot be played?

Since the last update, half of my Apple Music has now been greyed out and gives error messages (see below). Paid up member of Apple Music iPhone 6 iOS 9.2. Any thoughts? TIAimage.png

I'm having the exact same problem. Really frustrating. Did you find a fix?

I have seen this with some tracks that are now greyed out that I am pretty sure before, but not a huge amount of the music I added from Apple Music. I - at least based upon what I have seen - would just chalk it up to an artist and/or their label deciding to remove certain songs from streaming. I see this more in compilation albums where the songs are either from different artists or different labels during an artist's career.

I have this problem with songs synced from iTunes on my mac. they all play on the mac but on my phone some are grayed out. I first thought it was due to space so i converted them all to aac 128kbps, which came to about half the size as the mp3 versions. but the problem still occurs. Any help would be appreciated

Did you find a fix?  I hate upgraded.  Every time it seems like something.  I spent all day just trying to get my iPad to sync and finally found enough info and things to try that I got it to sync but all of the songs are greyed out and none will play.  These are all songs that I had added from CDs - not purchased through iTunes.  I can play the ones purchases through iTunes but none that I added from CDs onto my computer to sync.

    An update to my problem:

I did find a fix for my problem, though my issue was that no Apple Music was playing but all purchased music was.

To fix (****see my note below before trying!!):

I went to Settings -> Music and uncheck the box next to iCloud Music. After a few seconds, I re-enabled it and got a message to have my music merge or replace my current music (or something to that effevt - it was a few days ago). After doing that, I went back to the Music app and it had to resync all of my playlists again. Once they loaded, everything played nicely.

Again, I have no idea why this worked, but it solved my problem of Apple Music not playing at all. Hope this helps someone.

****Also, I should note I have iTunes Match as well, so not sure if that's why my playlists reloaded. It's possible doing the steps above, you may have to rebuild all your playlists.  I didn't play around with it much to figure out how it happened, I just know what I did and it solved my problem.

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

    In short, I couldn't find a fix.

Due to laziness more than anything else, I simply cancelled Apple Music and have gone to Spotify which I had in the past.

My Apple Music was fine until an iOS update, so Apple can thank themselves for a lost customer.

Good luck to anyone with the same issue.

Same problem here. Whole blocks of various songs in "My Music" are grayed out and can't play since I upgraded to IOS 9.2. These are all songs from my own iTunes library.

No response from anybody at Apple? Looks like they are deprecating iTunes in order to drive users to their streaming service...

#1 - Apple employees - even the ones who I am sure are told to follow these discussions - are not allowed to respond here. You can try either talking/chatting with their technical support or write your issues on their Feedback page - though they do not send responses to the feedback page either, but they do read them.

#2 - A lot of what people are seeing - greyed out songs/albums - have nothing to do with Apple. It mainly has to do with the artists and/or their labels requesting that certain tracks/albums/etc. are not to be made available for streaming - or at least not streaming on Apple Music. You can see this quite often in anthology albums where an artist may have had contracts over the years from different labels and so some of the tracks in the anthology/greatest hits are not available.

"uncheck the box next to iCloud Music." I don't have that box in my music settings. Nothing on that page says iCloud Music. Any other suggestions of what I can do?

After you have the music downloaded inside iTunes, Go to File>Library>Update iCloud Music Library. If you don't see the file tab in the upper left hand corner of itunes, press the "alt" key on your keyboard. This should get rid of the outlined cloud in iTunes next to the songs which should let you play the music on your phone.
