Q: Can you no longer pair an iPhone with an iMac?
Apple support said that I should use Air Drop in order to share files between my iphone and iMac ( both running the latest systems) in response to my request for advice as to why I could not pair them. Seems strange to me because under Devices on the Mac (under Bluetooth) I can see iPhone and an option to connect to network but I get told that network is not available. My keyboard, mouse and trackpad all work fine so any advice would be very welcome. Or can you no longer pair?
My iPhone pairs perfectly with my car for hands free calling.
iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), null

No.
Not only can you not do it now, it has never been possible to do it.
For Airdrop, see this -> https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203106
