Q: Safari keeps crashing/freezing after install of El Capitan

After the install of El Capitan, Safari 9.0 keeps locking up and or crashing.

I have a Mac Book Pro 15'' 2.3 GHz i7, 4GB Memory, 500 GB HD, iOS 10.11

When using Safari, I will have class work up and YouTube or iTunes playing. Before El Capitan it would do those processes with out a problem. Now it seems to lock up, unable to refresh, unable to exit Safari. I have to force quit and shutdown to try and get control back. Occasionally even after the shut down it will still lock up.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Same here. Yesterday in the evening it crashed. Everything was fine since I disabled font smoothing as @norbertsz suggested it. Unfortunately yesterday closing a tab with youtube vid I watched caused the problem as usual.

Guys, do you have multiple tabs with youtube videos loaded (loading) opened in safari? I've noticed I am always using it that way - one vid being watched and few other loading in background safari tabs. MAYBE it's a new youtube conspiracy trying to make us use the 'watch later' function instead of loading 5 videos at the same time?

or... some strange RAM disfunction? I have 8gb in my MBA but the full hd 60fps videos are now growing larger and larger. Open 3 or 5 tabs with long video and it's full. Could it be the reason?

Happy New Year (without Safari freezing)!

I don't. I'm too conditioned to avoiding the freeze that I never have any pages open containing a video that I amn't currently watching. So if I'm leaving a tab that has a video embedded in it I close it rather than leave it open.

It's probably just confirmation bias but I'm almost convinced that if I pause a video before closing the tab and don't roll the mouse about too much before closing the tab it seems to crash less. I'm not going to advocate that as a solution as I'm sure it's just random odds working in my favour (as many apparent solutions can be).

Hey all you smart people, I want to put in my 2 cents worth:  I was a avid Apple devotee from 2000-2015.  Please notice the verb tense.  I loved everything Apple.  My first discomfort came with my iPhone 5S, then with Yosemite and now my iPad (series 2).

Money was no object.  I wanted the newest and best.  I was ready to purchase an iPhone 6S....and then a month before my contract expired....I decided not to.  I have 8, yes eight computers in my little apartment.  Four Apple, three of another type and one of yet another type.

Apple still has great stuff left over from the good old days.  Time is ticking away and this saddens me beyond words.

I haven't been able to confirm this yet, but I've been getting the same impression. It seems that the problems crop up when I've quickly closed a video and clicked into an unrelated app.

Here we go into 2016 with Safari incapable of handling YouTube. Maybe I should get a G4 and run Jaguar. That worked.

    Hi @Defender68,

Can you confirm it freezes when switching or closing a tab or window that contains a YouTube video? You mentioned it crashed with Safari.

Your cursor disappearing is not (from what I can gather) shared with others having this issue. It appears that for most of us, the freeze doesn't affect the cursor being visible or moving. On my own laptop, anything that was running in the background continues to run so I'm convinced it's the UI freezing except for the cursor.

You explicitly get a mention in your crash log of the graphics hardware having an issue, which will at least help speed things along when dealing with Apple support.

Yes, I share that impression (except replace 'unrelated app' with 'other tab'). But I wouldn't rule out confirmation bias in my case, like I mentioned before, so I'm not rushing to conclude that it helps with the diagnostics just yet.

    Hi @palegreenghosts

The Safari browser freezes even with a single tab open on any site videos or images.

During the freeze , the computer shut my session and it takes off it to regain control .

It may be necessary to reset the SMC and PRAM.

The log information is actually explicit .

From what you've said it sounds like you're having a slightly different issue the majority who've commented in this thread. That said, there's still heavy overlap in that Safari is being used when the freeze occurs. I mention is merely for awareness that the root cause could be completely different, or past and future diagnosis written here may or may not be relevant to the particular issue you're having.

The Safari browser freezes even with a single tab open on any site videos or images.

This does sound different. The console messages aren't the same. The symptoms are different [problems with video and images (nobody has had image issues in this thread) on any site].

Before starting a reinstallation of Mac OS El Capitan to return to a factory system and test the functionality of Safari, I enrolled in the Public Beta program.

I installed Mac OS X Public Beta 10.11.3 and miraculously Safari works perfectly with Google Street View and Youtube.

Dear EaglePar4,  Apple doesn't care about your problems.  Look at all the prior threads?  Complain as much as you want.  Apple will take your money but it won't solve your problems.  They just update with new problems.  This is all a very sad situation.
