Q: iMac 27" Screen goes black repeatedly, but then settles for a while?

Hi

 

I have searched and found numerous posts which sound similar to mine, but none seem to be so bad. Its a long post, but I want to make I have given as much information as possible

 

My Energy Saver settings are default 10 minutes for display & computer sleep, but I always find the screen will go black for a period of time before it goes to sleep and normally when I go back to it I press the keyboard or trackpad and the screen comes back to life. However, this time it didn't. I tried everything I could, but in the end I had to hold down the power button until it turned off. Once I restarted it was ok again.

 

I didn't think much of it, but I researched and found lots of people had similar issues, but were mainly on MacBooks. I did find a post where people had set a hot corner to turn the display off, so if the problem happened again they went into the hot corner and then came out of it and the display would come back on. This stops the need for having to force the computer off. I set up a hot corner, just in case it happened to me again and I'm glad I did.

 

In the last couple of weeks the display has been going off at random whilst I have been using it, nothing graphic intensive, just web browsing. Going into my hot corner and coming out of it bought the display back to life thankfully. It was yesterday that things got really bad, to the point that the display was staying on for about 3-4 seconds before going off. Again, going in & out of the hot corner worked, but then it didn't. Initially I thought it maybe some kind of software issue, but when I restarted the grey screen would only show for about 3 seconds and then go black, so I didn't even see the Apple logo. I could hear everything start and it would pause at the logon screen. Going in and out of the hot corner several times finally gave me enough time to login before it went off again.

 

After logging in I got it back only for it to go off again. I tired everything I could to get the screen to come back to life but it didn't want to play. All the time everything was working on the iMac, it wasn't frozen and didn't crash, just no display. I did some research on my iPad and this seems to be a common problem in one form or another, but no one that I could see had it as bad as mine. Some people were saying it was software related, other that it was logic boards, but as I said earlier I think the majority of posts related to MacBooks and not iMacs.

 

This was my first Apple purchase and I feel like a fish out of water as I have always had PC's before and if they went wrong I just fixed it myself, but I don't think this is going to be the case this time.

 

Very late last night I managed to get the display on long enough to run iBoostUp and let it give everything a spring clean. It kept going off whilst it was doing its things, but I did manage to get the display back for long enough to shut it down fully and I left it unplugged over night.

 

It started working fine this morning, but after more reading I have reset SMC and PRAM as that advice seems to be given a lot when people are having problems.

 

I have been using it for roughly a couple of hours and it has just this second gone off for the first time. I did my hot corner trick to get it back, then about 3 sends it went again. Now it seems to be ok again. The only program running is Safari.

 

I am running Lion 10.7.4 with all updates done and I am not running Boot camp for Windows 7 I thought about doing a clean install, but I am not convinced that is going to work and don't want to go through all the hassle of that only to find it still does it! Taking it to Apple worries me, because as its intermittent it may not do it whilst they have it and also I am worried about all my personal data I have on it. Would they wipe the hard drive and would they access my files? I have never had this worry before as any PC problems I just switched problem items myself. The machine will be a year old in a couple of months and I am already thinking the AppleCare Protection Plus is a very good deal and a must have at £139 for two extra years warranty.

 

Any suggestions great fully received.

    Mine worked for a month with the display brightness set to about 30%.  I thought it was fixed, perhaps by some software update.  But today, it happned again and I have a black screen that appears non-recoverable.  It is INTERMITTENT so any "fix" cannot be verified by short term observation.

    Did you look at my post from yesterday, at the bottom of Page 17?

     

    It worked for me, and for Gaetaninparis. And then I got a nice congratulatory email from Apple Support!

     

    If you can once again get your iMac working at all ... even with a dim screen ... try my suggestion. It worked for me. And for Buddy in France.      

     

    And give us a report FFS.

    Yes.  I tried it.  It did not work.  And my point is that any solution that APPEARS to work might only be temporary.  The problem is intermittent.  It can appear every day, and then disappear for weeks, making it look like whatever one did, worked.

    THat's what I've been saying too. There are many possible causes, there are many possible fixes. Some things work for a while (it might be days, or even weeks), some might make the problem less frequent (eg it only happens every few weeks instead of every few minutes).

     

    if Boomer49's solution worked for him, then that's great. But that doesn't mean it is the solution to all our problems, and touting it as such is not what one should do.

    I think that the object of the game is to keep an open mind, and experiment with any-and-all suggestions (within reason) that have worked for other folks who are experiencing the same problem. If Apple's engineers and coders are unable to track down and fix the root cause (or causes) of this issue, we normal (non-geek) folk have to be satisfied with fumbling-around and trying random stuff (changing-out the keyboard, removing supplemental aftermarket memory, my pedal-to-the-metal brightness surge, etc) that might at least treat the symptom (for at least the time being) and let the professionals worry about The Big Picture.

     

    I never claimed that my lucky shot-in-the-dark was the be-all and end-all super-fix. It sounds so implausible that I felt that I had to make the point that ... if nothing else had worked ... it was at least worth a try.

     

    And now some dude in Paris has his iMac working again.

    Hi everyone,

     

    I'm having the same problem for years now. I tried almost everything posted in this thread and some of the solutions worked, but just for a short period of time.

    I'm just "living with it" since i can't find a solution

    But i find a way to when it happens, bring it back up for weeks.

     

    I do think that this is software but not hardware related. Maybe a combination of both.

     

    The trick:


    For me it works on OSX Yosemite 10.10


    When the screen shuts down...


    1. Restart you iMac and do a PRAM reset (Option+Cmd+P+R).
    2. Restart you iMac again (Force restart with power button)
    3. Then, press ALT key while starting the machine to enter boot selection menu (Startup manager)
    4. Just leave it there running until the screen comes back

     

    If hours pass and this not work, reinstalling OSX Yosemite 10.10 might help. You'll need the help of a flashlight to see the screen

     

    After this steps, i get the screen back on with no blackouts for weeks.

     

    I know it seems weird, but for me, it works.

     

    I hope we can find a real solution

    HI Mfacci,

     

    Thank you for sharing this "tip" with us. It seems that we keep discovering new ways of dealing with this issue.

     

    Maybe it it is just me, but I find your instructions a bit too brief and unclear. For example, in Step 1 you write "Restart your iMac and do a PRAM re-set" ... but you do not mention how you turned it off (with the power button I guess?) and "Restarted" it again ... With the power button I guess. More importantly, at exactly what point in time do you do the PRAM re-set. As it is loading in? After the process is complete and the screen shows what??

     

    In Step 2 do you simply mean "Turn it off with the power button and then turn it back on with the power button"? And exactly WHEN in that booting-up process do you press the ALT key?

     

    As you can see, I am not very computer-savvy and need as much step-by step detail as possible. Take your time.

    My 27" iMac is a mid 2010 machine, running latest El Capitan. It's behaved pretty well up till a couple of days ago. At first the screen went black a few times, but this morning it was going off every few minutes. I used the "Alt, Command, Eject, then any key" trick to keep reviving it, but obviously couldn't get any work done like that. So I read forum posts. Boy, this has affected a LOT of people, hasn't it? Boo, Apple.

     

    I did the recommended PRAM reset but it made no difference. Then I tried changing my keyboard and mouse batteries ...no change. Then I did the SMC reset ...still happening. I had no hot-spots set, but one person advised setting up a hot spot to sleep the screen, then wake up, so I did that.

     

    Finally I saw your tip about whacking the screen brightness to 100%. YAY, it seems to have worked!! ...so far anyway. Thank you Boomer49. I'm finding 100% a bit too much so I'll experiment with reducing to 80% tomorrow. I wonder what the long term prognosis is? It doesn't seem fair that only 2011 machines got the free replacement. Really Apple, BOOOO.

     

    General observation: Every time the screen went black and I revived it, the mouse pointer would be at the top left of the screen, regardless of where it was when the screen went black. I have no idea if that's normal or whether it's significant. What do you technical guys think?

     

    My advice to anyone reading these threads ...don't panic. Don't spend a fortune replacing parts until you've tried all the suggested tricks.

    That's great to hear ... thank you for letting us know. My fix has been "holding" since November 15th, and on December 13th I received a congratulatory email from Apple Support after GaetaninParis reported that it worked for him too. And then on December 17th I received an email and then a phone call from Applecare Outreach (in Texas, I think) that said ...

    Everything was working great for over 6 months, and then I stupidly increased the brightness--and immediately (like within 10 minutes) the screen started going black again.  Read the various posts, and changed energy saver to never, and slid brightness to 100%. Let's see if this works.  I love it at 100% and do not like when it's not bright. .but I also hate having it black out every 10 seconds!

     

    Also, I've upgraded to El Capitan so it's not the old software.

    You didn't provide any background history or description of the when and how and time of the problem, but I'm still curious to know if this little fix of mine continues to "hold" with your iMac. Please keep us posted.

    Hi Ron; I had this problem  consistently about 6 months ago.  I lowered the brightness and it appeared to resolve.  I had tried to reset PRAM, and all the other suggested fixes, but they did not work.  However, after reading some recent posts, I decided to give it another chance at a higher brightness level which is better for my eyes.  After I raised the brightness level (using settings) it immediately started blacking out as in the past.  I followed your post, to turn energy saver to NEVER and move to 100% brightness in one sweep.  Yesterday, things seemed to be OK.  This morning, when I lowered the brightness to 80% it almost immediately starting blacking out again.  I restarted the computer, and lowered brightness to about 50% and will see how that works out today.  What other information do you need/want?  This problem is really frustrating.     Hi Marjorie,

     

    Thank you ... that "history" pretty-well answers what I was wondering about.

     

    I am guessing that if the 50% that you lowered it to (just today) works OK for you (and continues to function) you could just leave it at that and cross your fingers. Or, you could do the fast-rush to 100% (as before) and (if it holds) just continue to leave it there ... and not bother with my last little step of later throttling-it-back to 80%. There was really no real need for me to do that, other than lowering my carbon footprint. The 100% level is just fine with my 66-year-old eyes, and the heat pouring out of the vents at the top of the screen makes my little office a bit cozier. (I'm on a remote ranch on the eastern slope of the Rockies in Alberta.)

     

    I'd appreciate it if you'd (please) continue to keep us posted ... for better or for worse.

    I tried posting this in the iTunes Support forum, but was not allowed for some reason. Perhaps a mod or another member could help me.:)

     

    Several months ago I subscribed to Apple Music, but after four months (three free and one paid) I decided to unsubscribe ... because I am not into streaming.

     

    For the previous year both my iPad iTunes and my big iMac iTunes had worked together flawlessly ... I guess via the cloud ... things seemed to take care of themselves. If I bought  something from iTunes via my iMac, it later appeared on my iPad ... added to the library that 5000 songs that I'd already accumulated via CD's and earlier purchases. If I made a playlist on my iMac, it later appeared on my iPad.

     

    And now there's suddenly no iTunes app on my iPad! Nada. Zip.

     

    When I tap on the Music button, all there is now is a fresh new dead page ... mostly black ... with <apple symbol> Music in the middle and at the top a blended photo of a dark-haired young woman in a black leather jacket who is wearing blue headphones. And the page is totally dead. no links! What gives?

     

    Am I expected to pay $10 month forever just to access my own music on my iPad? That seems so wrong.

    Problem solved!

     

    I fired-up my iMac and went to iTunes and (I think) clicked on My Account. After entering my name and password I explored around a bit and noticed a symbol at the top (among many others) that looked like my iPad. And so I clicked it and looked around a bit. all about my iPad. It mentioned that the iPad's iTunes could (among other things) be RESTORED by connecting it to the iMac with a suitable USB cable. I looked in my usual snarl of cables and was despondent when I could not find anything like that.

     

    And then I realized that they were talking about the iPad's power/recharging cable ... the one with the removable little white brick on the end that's plugged into the wall beside the bread-maker in the kitchen. I got it ... turned off the iPad ... connected to the Big Brother iMac ... turned on the iPad ... entered my 4-digit code as requested ... and in a few minutes the iPad's missing iTunes was fully restored.  Yay!
