Jan 7, 2016 3:11 PM in response to FoxFifthby timsj,I was just thinking for the case where say I want to share a bunch of folders (say that are 150GB in total) with a friend.
Does that friend need to purchase the 200GB iCloud storage plan? (or 1TB)Sounds like yes...

Jan 7, 2016 3:32 PM in response to timsjby Old Toad,You can't share files on the iCloud Drive with someone else because they would have to be signed in to your Apple/iCloud account and in doing so would also have access to your emails, messages, App Store purchases, etc. iCloud Drive is not for sharing files with others, only for syncing between devices that you own and use.
You need something like Dropbox. If you purchase 200 GB of Dropbox storage you can share the files on it with whomever you'd like and they would not need to purchase space also.

Jan 7, 2016 4:02 PM in response to Old Toadby timsj,Thanks.
Here I am actually wondering about sharing 150GB of Photos (using iCloud Photo Sharing), via a number of different albums.
I believe the iCloud storage I purchased can be used for my photos, which in turn I can share with others in albums.
Hopefully I haven't misunderstood!
Background:
I have 150GB worth of pictures, in a whole bunch of Photos albums
My goals:
1. Have all photos available on all my devices
2. Have these photos reside locally on my laptop (so I have a local copy)
3. Back up all my photos
4. Share all of these photos with people, many outside of my family
I think I need to purchase iCloud storage (so I purchased the 200GB plan), then I need to turn on iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Photo Sharing, then I can start sharing the albums.
Assuming the above is correct, I'm not sure then if the other person I am sharing the photos with needs to purchase the 200GB plan also.

Jan 7, 2016 4:35 PM in response to timsjby FoxFifth,I have not used it myself but I don't believe that the person who you are sharing the photos with needs to purchase any iCloud storage -- or even an Apple ID if you use the public website option. There is a limit of 5,000 photos and videos per shared album. iCloud Photo Sharing FAQ - Apple Support

Jan 8, 2016 9:54 AM in response to timsjby Old Toad,FixFirth is correct. If you're using the Shared Photo Albums the recipients do not need to purchase iCloud storage.
If they have Photos or iPhoto you can create a private album and, invite them to subscribe and they'll be able to view the photos in their Photos or iPhoto library.. For those who are on other platforms create a public photo album and send the URL for it to the recipients of your choice.
