Q: how to choose which aps open automatically at start up

MacBook Pro (13” mid 2010)

 

OS X 10.11.12

 

8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

  recently added memory and went form OS Snow Leopard   to El Captain. 

 

I don't want excel to open automatically every time I start up computer. How can I change that ; find preferences for what opens at start up?

    Go to System Preferences --> Users & Groups.  Click on your account in the left-hand pane, then click the tab "Login Items."  You'll then see a list of all/any programs that you have chosen to open when your computer starts up.  Find Excel in the list, select it, then click the minus button below said list.  That will remove Excel from the list of programs set to open at start-up.
