Q: WiFi only works next to router, no signal once I move away

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 15" Unibody. The WiFi only works when I am literally within a few feet from the router. As I move away the connection disappears. However, when I am on campus in class it works when I am within 10-14 feet from the router (assuming its because the router is much more powerful). Any ideas on how to fix this? Would I need to get the antenna replaced? Hoping there is a cheaper way to fix (I already use an external USB WiFi stick for the time-being but its hopefully temporary).

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
