Q: 'iPhone is disabled. Connect to iTunes' stuck on black screen.

I smashed my iPhone 5S a while back, making it unusable as it was so bad. I was locked out, trying to get into it on the smashed screen. Since then my computer corrupted, meaning I lost everything. I now have the 5S repaired, but I cannot get my data from it. To begin with the message I had was 'iPhone is disabled. Connect to iTunes', from the lock screen. When plugged in, i got the message from iTunes 'To allow access, please respond on your iPhone'. Nothing happened on my iPhone. I could not restore from my iTunes backup, as it was lost on my corrupted computer, I could not use the iCloud method, as the fixed 5S was stuck in aeroplane mode. So, i decided to put it in recovery mode. When I plugged it back into iTunes, it made me update to iOS 9.2. Now I have updated, my iPhone has restarted, and has taken me back to the same message 'iPhone is disabled. Connect to iTunes', but from a black screen. When I connect to iTunes, i get the other message again 'To allow access, please respond on your iPhone', yet nothing happens on the iPhone. What can I do to get my iPhone functioning again, and if possible my photos and data back, including the ones that aren't backed up to iTunes?

I do not think there is a way to get your data back, unless you have an OLD iCloud backup you can restore from. Before you continue, realize that doing so will eliminate any chance of recovering any data but it will mean you will have a working phone that isn't just a brick.

First, put your iPhone into recovery mode by following the directions below.

Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again

    1. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.
    2. While your device is connected, force restart it: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, and don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.
    3. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Restore.
If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits recovery mode, you'll need to repeat these steps and choose Restore  when you get back to this step.
    4. After the Update or Restore completes, set up your device. If you previously backed up your device with iTunes or iCloud and had to restore your device in step 3, you might be able to restore from your backup during setup.

Then, restore the device from an iCloud backup by following the directions below:

    Restore from an iCloud backup

    1. On your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Software Update. If a newer version of iOS is available, follow the onscreen instructions to download and install it.
    2. Make sure you have a recent backup to restore from.
      • On your iOS 9 or iOS 8 device: Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, then tap a device listed under Backups to see the date and size of its latest backup.
      • On your iOS 7 device: Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage, then tap a device listed under Backups to see the date and size of its latest backup.
For information about backing up manually now, see Back up your iOS device to iCloud. If you don’t see a backup you expected to be there, see the Apple Support article If you need help restoring from an iCloud backup.
    3. Go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap “Erase all content and settings.”
    4. In the Setup Assistant, proceed to “Set up your device,” tap Restore from a Backup, then sign in to iCloud.
    5. Proceed to “Choose backup,” then choose from a list of available backups in iCloud. For help deciding which backup to restore from, including information about restoring from another device’s backup, see the Apple Support article If you need help restoring from an iCloud backup.

Set up a new device from an iCloud backup

    1. Turn on your iOS device.
    2. In the Setup Assistant, proceed to “Set up your device,” tap Restore from a Backup, then sign in to iCloud.
    3. Proceed to “Choose backup,” then choose from a list of available backups in iCloud.

After using an iCloud backup to restore or set up a device:

    • Your settings and accounts are restored from the iCloud backup you chose. Your device restarts and begins downloading your purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, books, photos, and other content. If your device can’t download the version of an app that was backed up, it downloads the latest version. Your purchased content is automatically downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store based on iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match, and iTunes Radio availability. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the store.
    • You may be asked to enter passwords for iTunes Store, App Store, and iBooks Store accounts to restore purchased items.
    • Progress bars appear below Home screen icons for apps being downloaded. To make an app a priority for downloading, tap its icon.

To check if the information on your device is fully restored, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage (Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup on an iOS 7 device).

If you subscribe to iTunes Match, you can download your songs, albums, and playlists from iCloud after other information on your device is fully restored.

For information about messages that may appear while restoring information from an iCloud backup, see the Apple Support article  If you need help restoring from an iCloud backup.

Note:    You can restore information on your iOS device from an iTunes backup instead of an iCloud backup. For information, see the iTunes Help topic Back up your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad.
    I hope this helps!
    Best regards,
    Austin
