That's great advice. I have been looking at the Sony displays but they start WAY over $1000 and I just don't have that kind of budget for this monitor.

I thought it was the Mini, but I "solved" the problem by connecting anotner dysplay with HDMI at the same moment my TB went to black. Result: both dysplays functioned oké. After that I dysconnected the HDMI and TB didn't go to black anymore. Cann't explain but it worked for me.

I keep sending them data captures with failures on every different setup they would like me to try next. After two weeks of silence and no replies to my emails, the guy comes back with the error reports are inconclusive. REALLY. That is the opposite, the results are conclusive, the TBDisplays are failing with every possible setup they ask me to do. How is that inconclusive? Who do we have to call to get these displays recalled? Who do I have to call to get my money back? I'm tired of this crap. This is BS pure and simple.

I brought my two TBDisplays and computer and TB hub in for a couple rounds of genius bar tech time. After going over the last 3 month long case file, they came to a conclusion. They offered to refund me my entire purchase costs, including my Apple Care plan for the two monitors that I had for nearly 16 months............I jumped at the offer. I wished for this answer, but never thought they would do this. My online and telephone Apple tech said he couldn't make that offer, nor would he tell me who could. The bottom line is Apple knows there is a problem with the TBDisplays. My best guess is there are problems with the built in hub in the displays. Whatever was plugged into the hub, whether another TB display or another hub or the USB ports. Those devices always seemed to be dropped for various reasons. Whether sleep mode or start up or who knows what else. I feel rather lucky at this point. I can now move forward instead of doing the constant try this, try that approach. I had over a year of that type of trouble shooting. Never once did an apple tech tell me they were looking for problems here. But the store manager and genius bar tech were well aware of the issues. Of course me bringing in two TBDisplays, computer and stuff in their original boxes on a busy saturday, might have helped. It doesn't help business to make a scene with a store full of customers. Thank you Apple.

May 19, 2015 7:02 PM in response to Dennis L Jacobby Raintreeca,More or less same profile, though the Apple Store solution was to finally concede the original TBD just could not be figured out and they gave me a new monitor. It has been a few weeks since the switch and all is working as it should. Then added bonus is the monitor is covered for a year, though having the more than mild suggest to get Applecare on it does fill me with a fair amount of trepidation.
Despite the positive resolution, no one should have to deal with all the back and forth with the Applecare rep. ( I can't imagine what it would have been like without that coverage) and then the numerous trips to the not so local Apple store. As noted by many this has been an ongoing problem for years and a recall notice and replacement program should be in the offing for all.

May 24, 2015 4:47 AM in response to Raintreecaby hottuna,I have a MBP and this display and have been having the same issue as many in this post. After about 6 months, the display started flickering and I had the cable replaced at my local Apple store. While this fixed the flickering issue, the display would still not wake up after sleep on a consistent basis.
I do think I finally solved this by using a thunderbolt cable from the MBP to the port on the back of the display. In over two weeks now it has worked every time. For $40 a great workaround. Not optimal, because something is still broken, but at least I can wake up the display now. My guess is there is a design flaw in the logic board for the built-in cable.

I then connected the TBD's "2 in 1" TB cable to a Lacie TB hard drive. Everything seems to be working fine now for the first time in at least a year. Many thanks.

With these changes and the bypass cable the MBP now wakes properly after a full night's sleep. pmset settings (which may not all be necessary but do work for me as a package) are:

Aug 11, 2015 8:32 PM in response to hottunaby Silenc3,The separate TB cable also seems to work for me. Although I can't say if it's a long-term solution since I just plugged it in and it worked. I'm pretty hopeful, though. Seems like this is a manufacturing defect given how widespread this problem is. Hopefully, we'll see Apple making things right by acknowledging the defect and offering out of warranty repairs.

I am using El Capitan and those files are no longer listed in the directory you mentioned. I tried to do a search for them and can't find them. Do you happen to know which files in El Capitan will do the same job? I have a new Thunderbolt display (4 months) and am constantly encountering this problem. I have been opening and closing the MacBook Air to get it to wake the screen.

On the wired keyboard connected to the TB display: press AND HOLD the space bar for SEVERAL seconds.... and... the display wakes up :-D

Many weeks i have had problems with the display suddenly off, not wake up.
But when i bought new thunderbolt cable the display works perfectly. New cable has two plugs one to notebook, another to display.
Recomend you to buy new cable if you have problems.

My setup is a 2013 Macbook Air, hooked to a TBD (with several stuff hooked to the TBD like FireWire ElGato Sat tv receiver, USB hub with sticks or iPhones and one or more external USB hard drives) . Not always, but often when the MBA goes to sleep and I try to wake it by magic mouse click, the screen stays black.
This problem only appeared after update to 10.11 (or around the time when I did the update in November).
What helps for me is to unplug the TB cable from the MBA and replug it again. Then the screen comes up again. Doing so disconnects everything connected via the TBD, like FireWire EyeTV receiver (including interrupting potential running recording jobs) or USB volumes with open files. Therefore this is not a comfortable workaround in every situation.
What helps as well is to connect to the MBA via RemoteDesktop from another Mac. This shows me, that the MBA is awake and that it is only the TBD that does not wake up correctly. When connected via Remote Desktop, I see the screen of the MBA in the default resolution of the TBD. Navigating to the System Control Panel for the Monitor and changing the resolution to something different than the native one, makes the TBD show a picture again. Afterwards I can set the resolution back to the native TBD one and everything works again without interrupting the connections. Due to another Mac necessary for this procedure, it is not a comfortable workaround as well. That's why I hope that Apple will take care and present a solution for the issue with the next MacOSX update. 10.11.3 that would be.

They replaced it because the Thunderbolt display wasn't seeing the incoming power. It was before so I don't know what happened. So now my screen comes on 95% of the time which is a huge improvement.
