Q: Notes not syncing from Mac to iCloud

My Notes app on my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012, running OS X 10.10.3) doesn't seem to be syncing with iCloud. The notes on my iPhone show up in iCloud and vice versa, but there seems to be no uploading or downloading between the computer and iCloud.

I originally had my notes syncing through my Gmail account. When I tried using iCloud for notes instead, I was prompted to create an iCloud.com email address. I did so, and now I can turn on the Notes switch on both my computer and my iPhone. My Gmail address is still my primary email address for iCloud (the one I sign in with), but the new iCloud.com address shows up on both devices as an alternate, and I no longer get the prompt to create an iCloud.com address when I flip the switch on either device.

I moved all my notes from the Gmail folder to the iCloud folder on my computer, but they just won't show up on iCloud.com or on my phone. Also, a new note I created on my phone does show up on iCloud.com but not my computer.

I've tried flipping the iCloud "Notes" switches on and off on both devices to no avail — I can't seem to jumpstart a sync of my notes between my computer and iCloud. Any ideas? Sorry if this question has been asked and answered; I tried Googling the issue.

Have tried everything suggested and my Mac Contacts and Notes will not sync with iCloud (took me a while to realize that -- and it was the ability to sync with iCloud that I thought was going to enable me to be free from Outlook). Upgrading to El Capitan now. We'll see if that fixes things.

Hi I've deleted both accounts from my phone, ipad and my laptop(s) but still unable to get them to sync. My two computers are on one set of notes and my phone and ipad is on a different one. The phone and ipad are the same as if I were to log on to icloud on the site. Anyone have a solution? Thanks!

Did it fix things? I didn't see any follow up reply anymore and I am curious.

I have exactly the same problem. Both iPad and iPhone since Notes perfectly. I object to be forced by Apple to use El Captain, in order to sync my notes, so I will be looking at installing Microsoft One Note and Importing my notes to that for use from now on.

I was having this same issue, but then I checked and found out that my OS X was not up to date. I reckon this is what is causing the sync error between the Mac and iCloud.

I'm currently downloading the update for my Mac, I'll update this post to let you know if it worked.

Just to bump this thread...I was having the same problem, but had not yet upgraded to El Capitan.  As soon as I did, syncing worked again.

Right - if you update your iOS devices to iOS 9 and have accepted the upgrade to the Notes app, and have not yet updated your Mac to El Cap, then your notes will continue to sync to iCloud.com from both your iOS devices and your Mac, but the iOS device and Mac will not sync to each other until the Mac has the upgraded Notes version found in El Cap.

    Cheers,

Microsoft One Note is far more useful, with tabs, links etc. Much better than Notes and syncs to all my devices. Brilliant App!

When you installed iOS9, you had the option to upgrade your notes at that time, or to leave them at the level they were running at. There was a clear warning that upgrading would result in the notes no longer syncing to the Mac until it was upgraded also, so, it asked if you were sure you wanted to upgrade now, or if you wanted to upgrade later.

Had you selected the latter, you would not be forced to do anything.

An update to my old post.

After updating my Mac OS to El Capitan, the sync error became history.

I'd suggest you check to confirm if the OS on both your Mac and iPad/iPhone are up to date.

This post is a bit old now but here's my experience as of April 2016.

If you upgrade to El Capitan then want to revert back to Yosemite as I did you need to export all the new files, photos, e-mails etc created in ElC to an external.

After using Time Machine to reinstall your old Yosemite system you can then add all those files, photos, e-mails back from the external.

A real pain, it takes ages but that was the only way to do it.

Since I now have IOS devices using the latest notes and Yosemite with the old notes, the Mac won't sync with the devices via iCloud.  I came on here looking for a solution to that problem.

I liked notes before and would have liked the new notes more if it would work for me but it doesn't so I know use Evernote.

For those that are interested, the reason I reverted back to Yosemite is because I am an Adobe CS5 user which isn't compatible with El Capitan.  I spent days playing around with Java and all sorts and finally gave up.  CS5 is working fine and I don't want to subscribe to Adobe's very expensive CC system where the moment I stop paying my files will be incompatible with my old paid for in full CS5 software.
