Q: With an Ethernet connection, should I also enable WiFi?

Is there any point in enabling my WiFi connection with an ethernet cable plugged into my iMac?  My printer can conveniently be connected via USB and, as I understand it, iCloud sharing with my other devices can take place through an ethernet or WiFi connection.

My new iMac will be here next week and this is the one unresolved question I still have.

Thanks for all the information provided here.  I rarely post, but read the comments here regularly and am amazed at the help and support being provided.

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.4.1), 13" ; 256gb drive, 8mb mem, i7.

If this is what you are referring to:

Then you will need a WiFi or cellular connection for your iDevices; however, most of the time, that is accomplished by using a router which sends your (internet) signal throughout your house so your other devices can connect wirelessly. So, your Mac and printer are fine with the Ethernet and, if you have a router (furnished by your internet provider or if you purchased your own), you do not need WiFi turned on on your Mac. That is how I have it set up at my house.

Yes, my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook are all connected via WiFi through my router.  I couldn't see any reason to use a WiFi connection with the iMac given that the printer won't use its WiFi connection with that computer.  With the ethernet cable plugged in, I couldn't see any justification for having both connections.

    Thanks for the response!
