Q: how can I archive emails and remove them from the mail program

I would like to archive years of emails that may be cluttering up my mail application.

Is there a way to archive them, just in case and maybe retaining the last 6 months for easy access?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Mail.app > Mailbox > Export Mailbox... will write out an archive in a portable format.

You can then archive that export, or can compress that into a single file for storage, and/or otherwise save the data.

If you want a date range, then you can either use a Smart Mailbox — those are basically saved searches — or can move the specified messages into a regular mailbox (folder) created for the export.
