Jan 11, 2016 8:27 AM in response to Ollyhicksby BobHarris,Please post the EtreCheck output
<https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174>
Run Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor and see if there are any processes consuming excessive CPU, Disk I/O, or Network I/O
Look at Applications -> Utilities -> Console and see if there are any log entries that are starting, dying, starting, dying, starting, dying, etc... This kind of activity generally does not show up in Activity Monitor nor EtreCheck output, but it can consume a lot of system resources.

Jan 11, 2016 10:21 AM in response to Ollyhicksby BobHarris,Try this from EtreCheck:
Then Paste into a forum Reply. It will look much better than the solid brick of output in your previous reply.
WWhich utility? There's 4 of them
You should have ONLY 1 "Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor"
You should have ONLY 1 "Applications -> Utilities -> Console"
If you have multiple copies of these utilities there is something seriously wrong on your system.
Or are you talking about EtreCheck? Your reply is unclear about what you are talking about?

Jan 11, 2016 12:26 PM in response to Ollyhicksby Linc Davis,The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Jan 11, 2016 12:28 PM in response to Ollyhicksby JimmyCMPIT,see this article and scroll down to turn OFF file vault and proceed as it recommends.
if this does not remedy the issue you may turn it back on.
Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac - Apple Support
