Q: Upgrading 4th gen Airport Time Capsule to new 802.11ac one

Thanks for any help, networking makes me nervous.

I found this link for setting up Time Capsule for the first time, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201510.

I’d appreciate advice on how to make the new Airport look like the old one to all our devices (so the transition is seamless).

Should I name the new Airport the same as the old one? Or is that problematic?

(BTW, is the name of the Airport TC the same as the network name?)

Also, I'd like to set up a guest network. Is there a setting I should select during set-up (not mentioned in support article)?

Read here in the forums that it’s better to start fresh with our back-ups and keep the old TC for awhile just to be sure things are backing up ok.

Later, could I wipe the old TC (flat square 3T one) and use it as an extender if we need it at the farther end of the house?

We have two MacBook Pros on 10.11.2 (a week old w/ inherited back-ups from next two MBP’s), two running 10.10.5, and one on 10.4.

We connect our Airport TC to a FIOS modem via cat-6 ethernet that’s in the same room but 11 feet away.

Take one of your MBP and run the airport utility.

It should detect the new TC with it working in the same room as the old TC.. just plugged into the wall.

    1. Click on the

    2. The setup wizard will run.

    3. By default it will choose to extend the existing TC by wireless.. Click Other Options in the bottom left corner. And change the selection to

    Replace an existing device.

    4. The rest is pretty well automagical. Pick what you are replacing.

    5. Pick the right network.. Mine might be more complicated because I have too much stuff.

    6. You can fix up the name.. and proceed from there.. I did not go any further because I did not want this to happen.

It will automatically change the original TC back to default settings.. once you finish it will tell you to remove the old TC and replace with the new one.

But you are over worrying yourself..

The TC is easy to setup and can be done without any hassles..

Setting up TM is much more the problem.

And yes, we do recommend you start a clean new TM backup for each computer.. do them one at a time once you finish the setup.

Wow! Thank you LaPastenague. The screen grabs are great. It's less scary when you know what's going to happen before you get there. I appreciate the help.
