Q: ipad music homesharing - cannot see any other homesharing libs on ipad

I have homesharing setup on my MBP and it would seem I have setup HS on my iPad BUT my iPad is playing dumb-dumb and not allowing me to see other iTunes libs. There is no reason why this HS lark should not work, I have even turned off the firewall on my MBP but still, dead as a dodo on the iPad.

iPad, iOS 9.2

Pathetic! Pathetic! Pathetic! I had a hunch that maybe because I had no music on my iPad this would preclude me from "homesharing" mac to iPad. It is true! Can you believe that, party people? I had to put a single track on my iPad to get moving on this. I see no reason why this has to be and I do think it is pathetic. Surely, when attempting to "homeshare" and no tracks reside on iPad, a wee dialog box would appear informing the user of the facts before "homesharing". Nope. This wee little piece of info that would help an endless number of users was not coded by Apple developers. Morons!

Is this really true? I'm in the same boat, where I haven't synced any music to the device and I can't find how to start Home Sharing.

Wait so I need a computer and an iPad? Can it be the same computer associated with a different device or different Apple ID?

Home Sharing works with iOS and TVOS devices, not just iPad:

Use Home Sharing to share iTunes content with other devices - Apple Support

Can it be the same computer associated with a different device or different Apple ID?

The Apple ID used when configuring Home Sharing must be the same between devices. You can use Home Sharing across multiple devices.

But I think the OP is saying you need to add music first? For this you need a computer. This would be easier with a SUDO command I am certain.

"The Apple ID used when configuring Home Sharing must be the same between devices. You can use Home Sharing across multiple devices."

I believe this is just using your Apple ID and accessing purchases. Home Sharing works across multiple linked accounts right??

Home Sharing Works by sharing the iTunes Library that exists on a computer out to other devices including other computers,  iOS devices and Apple Tvs.

You cannot Home Share a library form an iOS device. You can only share it from a computer.

Once shared, and assuming the sharing computer and all devices that you want to share to are connected to the same Wifi network the Library should appear at the bottom of the sorting option list.  Just Tap on "Artist" or "Songs" at the top of the Music App, to bring up the list, and the last option should be Home Sharing.

I am throughly confused now. So how is this any more help than Apple Remote? And am I thinking of a different service entirely? So if I purchase an album, there's no way to share it with the family? I swear I read something about this.

Sharing purchased content, is not done with Home Sharing.  Its done through Family Sharing.

    http://www.apple.com/icloud/family-sharing/

Family Sharing makes it easy for up to six people in your family to Share each other’s iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases without sharing accounts.

While home sharing can let you share an album bought form iTunes and downloaded to a computer with other devices on the network, its an entirely different purpose than Family Sharing.

Got it. Home Sharing is just like Apple Remote except it's not using two apps, so slightly less redundant. Family Sharing is totally different and I've had it set up for three years but never got it to work.

    Hi Phil,

OP's issue (and mine) is that the dropdown menu to select "Artist" or "Songs" - as highlighted in your reply below - is not available if you haven't copied any songs onto your iOS device. Is there a way to access a Home Sharing library without first copying a music file to an iOS device? Or, is there some other menu to access Home Sharing? Thanks

How?  Family Sharing has only been around for a year and half.  It was first debuted with iOS 8 in 2014.

Yeah, missed that sorry, you do actually need at least a song in there to get access to the menus. for some reason, it won't show the menu if there is nothing in the device's library.

Got it. Home Sharing is just like Apple Remote except it's not using two apps, so slightly less redundant.

Home Sharing uses your computer to stream music to your device - so the music is played on your iPhone, iPad, etc, and is not played on the computer. Apple Remote performs sort of the opposite of function: it lets you control music being played on your computer using your device - so the music is played on the computer, and is not played on the device. In either case you need two apps: iTunes on the computer, and Music (for Home Sharing) or Apple Remote (for the remote functionality) on the device (iOS, TVOS).

The issue brought up by the OP in this post is that Home Sharing can't seem to be found in the Music app without first moving a file onto the device from iTunes, to make the dropdown menu visible in Phil's post.

Family Sharing is totally different and I've had it set up for three years but never got it to work.

    Right: Family Sharing is different.

Thanks for the reply, Phil. I'll submit a feature request to Apple.
