Q: My MacBook Air (2013) won't turn on

This morning I was using it, and it was working fine. I came home this evening, plugged my MacBook into the MagSafe power adapter and went to power it on - and nothing happened. It is responding to the power adapter (ie lights up green initially and the orange) but I cannot get it to respond. At one stage I did hear a brief chime as if it was rebooting, but it cut off again.

I have tried everything I can find online - holding down the power button, holding down power, option and command, etc but nothing is working. I have only owned this laptop for a couple of months and I cannot think of anything that would have damaged it. As I say, it as working this morning.

I am desperate for help as I am currently abroad and not near an Apple Store and my laptop is essential for the work I am doing so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unbelievable.  Our 14 month old MBA just wouldn't boot recently.  This machine has never been dropped, never even been out of the house, but was (of course) out of warranty.  We didn't see this thread in time.  Apple is charging us $280 to replace the logic board.  All of this for a bad solder joint?  And clearly a problem we are not alone in...

The quality of Apple products is really becoming ridiculous.  Bad phones after 18 months, and now this?  With the premium we pay for their products I'm disgusted.  And angry.  And now out cash at the holidays, too.  (End of vent.)

I sometimes think the chips are somehow programmed to die on day 366.  Murphy's Law.  But I continue to have wake-up problems with my 2014 MBA, if I try to wake it immediately after it's gone to sleep, nothing works.  If I wait a few minutes, it works.  Very aggravating for a machine that is so expensive.

    • I Have tried all above solutions with my MacBook Air 2013, which won't turn on. I opened up the back and saw that when I press the power button the fan tries to spin a few times but stops, it does this everytime I press the power button. Does this mean a new fan is required? I've tried helping it along manually but that doesn't work.

Update--9 months after performing "the shake" my MBA is continuing to work with no problem. I never did take it to the Genius Bar. But I am still keeping my fingers crossed!

mid 2012 Macbook Air user here.

It all started last week when my MBA totally froze at the login screen, then came total darkness. I've tried all the keyboard combinations, shaking, kept the lid open for days to see if battery runs down, even took the bottom off and disconnected the battery cable.. Nothing helps.

Magsafe is still green and sometimes when I push the power button I hear like a squeak or small fan movement noise from the magsafe area. No idea what to do.

my MacBook Air (early 2014) would not turn on. It beeped once and then a black screen. I tried every thing the SCM Reset, the shake (though I don't know if I shook it hard enough) . The back apple light was working, but it never turned off even when I closed the lid. No lights on the keyboard (caps locked). Well so I tried the PRAM  reset, but I did not get the second startup chime. So I angrily shut the laptop lid to search with my iPad whether anyone else had had this same problem and voila! The  back light turned off! I opened my laptop and it turned on with the diagnostic screen offering a diskcheck and OS install which apparently I dont need. I don't know whether it was the PRAM reset or maybe my shutting it hard had the same effect as the shake!

In my case it was the power on button!!

Was using my 1.5 year old MacAir yesterday, battery was drained so I plugged it in but was not able to power it back on, it was charging the laptop with the green & amber light, did everything listed also with the shake but was not able to power it up.

Went to my local genius bar and was told it will take 2 days to diagnosis it .... as it was out of warranty & if it was something big like a logic board, I don't think I would have replace the hardware due to cost, so I decided to do it myself with other professional help.

Well it turn out to be my power up button, had to replace the whole keyboard for that single contact, so "I m with the shaking it like you mean it", if only I shakes it more!

Been using electronic product most of my life, tv , cd player, washing machine etc, basically  "anything that needs a power on button" but never once had a problem with it after a year & a half of moderate usage .... come on Apple!

    Hi

I have a Macbook Air 2014 , it was working fine until a couple of week it started to restart and then did nothing.

Finally i could make it start and did a diagnose with by holding the D button on startup, and show an PPT004 meaning that it had a battery issue, then i went online and bought a new battery, hooked it up today and turn on, then a couple of minutes later again turn of and couldnt make it turn on again!

what can i do since i am in a city that does not have apple centers.

    Please Help

    thank you
