Q: No internet connection until renew DHCP lease on Air Port Exreme

I have a cable modem connected to an AirPort Extreme (802.11n) which provides WiFi for my household. My iPads and iPhones all have no problem connecting to the internet. I also have a MacBook Air (2012) running El Capitan. My MacBook has problems connecting to the internet every time it comes out of standby. It connects to my WiFi network fine, and can see my local computers (on 192.168.0.x) but cannot see past my cable modem. I can "fix" the problem by running the AirPort Utility and renewing my DHCP lease. For some reason this then makes my MacBook work (note my other devices work fine without doing this). I've tested this solution by opening a terminal window and pinging google, which fails until I renew the AirPorts DHCP address. If I just leave the MacBook for about 10 minutes eventually it will pick up a connection and work fine.

Has anyone had a similar problem? I don't want to have to run the AirPort utility every time I want to use my MacBook!

I have also noticed that if I go to System Preference and renew my local DHCP lease I get a SINGLE ping go through to google but then it stops again until I renew the AirPorts IP address.

Really annoying as my other devices work, it's clearly not a connectivity problem!

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), null

if you APE has not been rebooted do so now and reset it, reboot your cable modem or whatever device the APE gets an IP address from.

Yeah, first thing I did is reboot everything. I've even hard reset the APE but still get the same problem on the MBA

I have the same issue here on my MB Pro Retina 13" Late 2013 running OS X 10.11.1. — My wife has an older MB Pro 13" Mid 2010 running OS X 10.11.1 and has no issues with wifi reconnection after sleep or low power mode.

The only work around I have is to force the DHCP to renew a lease by turning off/on the wifi to my machine.

Curious if anyone else has suggestions?

@Gordon, I'm not sure then but you tried what you should have. I would look at any 3rd party software that is acting on behalf of your network if you have any.

@Jayrom Does your wife computer exhibit this if you plug it into a cable? is it only the wi-fi or can you reproduce with ethernet?

@JimmyCMPIT - Her machine is used on both a LAN connection and Wifi and has no issues connecting to our SSID. Connects and obtains an IP (over wifi) no matter the case.

It is my MB Pro Retina that refuses to connect to the SSID until I toggle the wifi off/on.

    Thx!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I get the exact same behaviour in safe boot

Do you have the same problem on other networks, or only on yours?

Hmmm something I've not tried to be honest, I'll take it to work tomorrow and try it there and let you know.

The plot thickens. It seems it's just my home network, I dont have any problems with other WiFi networks (although  I've only tried my work network and my iPhone personal connection)

Can't think what the cause could be as I just have a APE with a default install connected to a cable modem...

    Any thoughts?

Yeah, one of the first things I did was hard reset the APE. Will try again though...

If the reset doesn't help, it's time to replace the device.

Finally someone with the same issue - all iPads, iPhones and old macbooks works fine. My new Retina ones (2012 and 2015) keep dropping the internet connection, and only way to get it back is to start airport utility OR disconnect/connect to Wifi again. Drives me nuts!
