Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iMac. I'm a bit unclear on when exactly in the startup process this is happening, or what exactly you are seeing or describing (screen goes black as in asleep, or black as in the machine has shut down?), but if it is happening during the startup process you may want to try doing a Safe Boot and see if the issue persists:
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
If the issue does persist, and/or if it is occurring after the completion of the startup/login process and involves the machine shutting down, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in this article more helpful:

Jan 12, 2016 10:10 AM in response to brenden dvby Ace73,Hi brenden dv,
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. I was perhaps unclear in my earlier message, so let me try to describe it again:
I can start up my Imac and log in without any difficulty. After using it about 2-3 minutes, and sometimes as much as 10 minutes (I think it stays on longer when the computer hasn't been turned on for several hours), then the screen goes completely black. The computer is still on and only the screen goes black. I say this because I tried running a movie on the computer, and the sound stays on as usual while only the screen goes black. I hope I have described my problem more clearly and can get your advise on what to do.
Many thanks in advance.
