Q: Mail not working with El Capitan

Made the big mistake of upgrading my laptop to El Capitan as it's filled with bugs.

The biggest problem is that I can no longer receive mail. Yes, I have a working connection, as I'm writing this. It seems none of the accounts will connect to the server. Mail is working on my desktop so I know it's the new install as it worked before the install.

Thanks!

I've tried it all. I reinstalled El Capitan on my computer that I had upgraded without any change. I even wiped the computer and installed it from scratch without any 3rd party software installed (which Apple claimed would be the reason for the issues). The fresh install showed the same issues, although the issue was now with a hotmail account. Reason for me wiping it completely was due to the purchase of a brand new computer. I bought a new Macbook Pro Retina out of frustration and to prove a point to Apple, where they proclaimed that the decision to upgrade was a personal decision and nothing they could be held responsible for. I therefore bought a brand new computer with El Capitan preinstalled, where I was never in a position to make a decision. I set up my email account on this new computer with the same issues, with no 3rd party software installed.

Apple still claim that the issue lies with the email provider, however they've now started looking into things again, when I asked if it was the issue with my email provider that Apple Mail app had my fans running full speed, eating up my 16 GB ram and making log files around 70 GB from 4 days of usage...I still haven't heard back from them.

As of now, I'm using my webmail as I refuse to invest any more time and money in finding other solutions to an OS X that is supposed to be so good.

It is also ironic that Apple won't offer any kind of compensation due to all these issues.

    Just upgraded.

Half my email accounts will no longer connect, even with passwords, etc. reentered.

Major fail for Apple and the Mail team. Not seeing any fixes offhand. Was hoping they would have gotten this sorted out by now - months after the release.

Well, since Apple can't figure it out and or admit they have a problem I switched to Airmail which was recommended by many. Love it and it works perfectly.

Really no reason to go back to Mail even if it does ever work again.

I had the same problem and called 1-800-APL-CARE.  Waited only 2 min and a rep guided me to fix it.  She had me delete my Google account that seemed to be the problem, reinstate it (name and password).  It took 2 minutes and now everything works fine.  She said that during the upgrade to El Capitan the server's name got dropped and needed to be refreshed......,

I have no anti-virus program, that that wasn't my issue. My mail now seems to be stable, but I had to spend a considerable amount of time performing troubleshooting to fix security certificate prefs that changed, re-entering passwords and server details, as well as Google Mail blocking incoming and outgoing mail because it sees the new Apple Mail as not secure. This was fixed by going into my Google accounts and changing to allow low security.

Bear in mind that all these fixes would have been daunting for anyone who didn't have good tech experience, and would have almost certainly required significant phone time with Apple or a trip to the Genius store.

I had a note from Apple related to a bug report I filed on the mail issues (rdar://23576060, Mail becomes unresponsive, generates multi-GB log files):

We believe this issue has been addressed in the latest OS X 10.11.4 beta release.  Please test with this release.  If you still have issues, please provide any relevant logs or information that could help us investigate.  OS X El Capitan 10.11.4 https://developer.apple.com/osx/download/

I haven't installed the beta as I only have one machine which I rely on for work. However, it sounds like there's some progress around solving these issues.

Too timid to even think of using a beta, but hope they get mail fixed. I'm still having security certificate issues. Even though 2 accounts are checked to allow mail, when I quit Mail and restart it, I will often get the same "!" alert again from one or both of those accounts. When I open back up, one or both of these accounts are either fine again, or taken offline! Very frustrating.

I got the "!" Yesterday too - totally random, had been working fine for a few months, what the...?!?

Also I run my own servers, I attached a real-time trace to the logs and it wasn't even connecting to the server.  Definitely a client side issue.  Could connect fine with my cellphone but not with a full blown macbook pro.  Seriously guys?

I only hope that we get some input from Apple staff on possible workarounds or ways to possibly reset. Shooting in the dark right now.

What I'm seeing now is that I only need to keep re "trusting" my two accounts each time I log into Mail. A PITA extra step to be sure, but at least I get mail.

Spent the last four days trying to fix this Mail thing. I fix one thing and another issue pops up. I talked to my server people on four occasions and finally came to the conclusion that it is El Kappytan causing the trouble. I upgraded  to the latest version and still have issues.

I fixed my issues by dumping Mail and started using Mozilla Thunderbird. It's working fine. I'll miss Mail but at this point I am four days in the hole because of it and now I'm playing catchup.

not sure if this will help but i fix all my mail issues by following these steps 1st:

    Quit Mail

    • In System Preferences > Internet Accounts, uncheck Mail for each account.
    • Go to the User’s Library
      • Scroll to Containers. Drag the com.apple.mail folder to the trash.
      • Scroll to Mail. Drag Mail folder to the trash.
      • Scroll to Preferences. Drag any com.apple.mail.plist files to the trash
    • Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar (optional i just forced emptied the trash via temrinal)
    • Empty the Trash. If not, Mail will continue to try and use data in the Mail folder.
    • Open System Preferences > Internet Accounts and check Mail for your primary account. I suggest adding one email account at a time.
    • Open Mail and test account.

    then these: (Very Effective)

where "System HD" is your systems volume name EG Macintosh HD or something similar..

booted into recovery and ran First Aid on my System HD Volume

    then ran within terminal:

    diskutil repairDisk /Volumes/"System HD"

    sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages --repair --standard-pkgs --volume /Volumes/"System HD"

and then the resetpassword command and then clicked on Reset ACL's on Home directory for my user

then rebooted the computer via shutdown -r now command

to fix all my mail issues...

Fantastic, thanks! Apple should have this posted on their FAQ page.
