Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support
If it does, run iTunes on computer and connect iPod. If iTunes picks it up, it may prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery." If you're OK with erasing the iPod, tell iTunes to do the Restore.

Jan 11, 2016 5:42 PM in response to barbetboyby userofanoldie,Ditto here, not only does it not register in iTunes, it is not "seen" by my car stereo, etc. Otherwise, it acts like it is working...very odd. Appreciate any help.

Jan 12, 2016 3:11 PM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby barbetboy,Yes, the iPod will give me the Disk mode screen, but when I connect it to iTunes, it simply charges the battery, but iTunes does not see the iPod. I have discovered (in my impatience) that if I disconnect the iPod after about an hour of this behavior, iTunes tells me that there had been an iPod connected that has been disconnected, and that it was corrupted and needed to be restored. I then go through all the steps again, reconnect the iPod, and again... no recognition of the iPod by iTunes.

Jan 12, 2016 5:34 PM in response to barbetboyby Kenichi Watanabe,The most likely problem is a faulty hard drive. That hard drive component is no longer produced, so any replacement is often a used part (and expensive). If you want to keep using your iPod classic, and its high-capacity storage design, you can consider replacing the hard drive with compact flash card or SD card (on an adapter).
