    Hi, Dennis.

Thanks for the question and hopefully we can get this working for you fairly quickly.  From your post it looks like your iPhone is not listed when attempting to select it as a source with the Movie Recording option in Quicktime.  If the iPhone is recognized in iTunes, multiple sync cables or USB ports have been attempted, then I would suggest resetting the ‘Trust This Computer‘ alert as this can cause a device not to show.  You can reset this setting two ways and I will include them in the quoted section below.  If you do choose the Reset Network Settings option, this will delete any network preferences such as remembered Wi-Fi locations.

If you're using iOS 8 or later: To untrust all computers, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. This will also reset your location and privacy settings. You can also untrust all computers by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will also reset your network settings.

‘Trust This Computer‘ alert on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once this is done, restart the computer and test using the iPhone display using Movie Recording.

Please let me know the outcome of these steps and thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

    Cheers

    Your response was partially correct.

After I launched iTunes with the cable attached, the problem was resolved.  That's all it took.   Nothing about Trust this Computer or cables or ports.
