Q: Disable swipe to delete/archive in El Capitan Mail?

I've just installed El Capitan and the new "feature" of swiping to delete/archive in Mail really annoys me. It doesn't go very well with the Apple mouse. I'd like to disable it. How can I do that? I guess there's some kind of Terminal command to do it.

And please don't answer that the feature is actually good and that I just don't understand it. That was not my question.

Just to add my two cents. The swipe feature is useless when using the magic mouse. It's far too sensitive to be useful.

The part that really gets me is that when I want to delete multiple emails with the holding the command key down also the wiggling is so unstable with the mouse. Takes longer to delete a batch. Classic view a choice in preferences takes away two line read. Huge mistake.

Completely agree with others - I will often click a mail item, but it doesn't click, because it thinks it'm 'swiping'.

However, i like my one finger swipe, so I still want a feature to turn the functionality off.

Only now saw your reply to my remark about the customisation. You have to disable SIP first, and thereafter enable it again. Afa some other remarks go wrt the issue, they were maybe not around before some external companies developed more gestures before Apple purchased them.

    System Integrity Protection. (SIP)

To disable SIP:  Reboot the Mac with Command R to get into recovery mode. After selecting the language, with all the options displayed, Diskutilities. In the menu bar of Disk Utilities, select Terminal.

    In terminal :

    csrutil disable

    and validate with Admin Password.

Command Q to quit and do a restart.

You would now be able to affect changes to the system. Remember to enable  SIP afterwards, following the same procedure.

Ah, ok, new one on me. No chance of doing that via Terminal and sudo I guess?

Nope! Have to do it from the Recovery Partition.

And of course I had to remove BetterTouchTool and MagicPrefs to work around XCode and Keychain incompatibilities (AKA bugs), so I guess I'm screwed.

I have gone into Mail > Preference > enabled Classic View layout.

This switches the Mail app layout from the default side-by-side inbox and message content, to the classic Mail for Mac format of having the inbox on top with the message content on the bottom.

    1. Open Mail app and go to the Mail menu and choose “Preferences”
    2. Go to the “Viewing” tab and click the checkbox for “Use classic layout”
    3. Close Preferences, the Mail inbox will rearrange itself to look different, but a side effect is that the swipe left gesture is disabled and no longer functions

That's not an acceptable solution for me I'm afraid. I was looking forward to and have been using the new format since it was available. Mainly because that's how outlook is at work and I've been using this style for over 10 years now.

    Thanks for the instructions though.

It's unbelievable there aren't about a thousand "me too" posts here. Surely we can't be the only few upset about this horrible UNfeature. Using the MagicPrefs app will no longer solve the problem if you're using the new chargeable Magic Mouse and for me, going back to the Classic View is not an option. Hopefully, Apple will incorporate a way to disable swipes in Mouse Preferences which would solve this. I advise everyone reading this to submit feedback at Apple.com/feedback.

Couldn't agree more: although useful, the feature is far too sensitive when using the Magic Mouse.

I've also submitted feedback through the beta program. Hopefully there will be an on/off switch or reduced sensitivity in the next version.
