Q: OS X EL Capitan crashes and shuts down my computer 2-3 times a day

I installed OS X EL Capitan and since the install my computer crashes and shuts down 2-3 times a day.  There is no logic or pattern to these crashes.  Anyone else having this issue?

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), iOS 9.0.2

Open the Console application by looking under /Applications/Utilities or, better, yet Command-space to open the spotlight search and start typing Console, and press enter:

In the Console, locate the messages around the time you got the kernel panic.

Luis, I've been having the same problem with my computer shutting down at random times throughout the day.  Here is an EtreCheck that I just ran but I don't know how to find the kernel panic logs.  I have tried resetting the SMC, resetting NVRAM and reinstalling OS X without any help.  I also took out all of my login items and I still am having the same problem.  Thanks for any help you can give me.

    EtreCheck version: 2.6.6 (226)

Start by completely removing "Clean My Mac" - never use such "cleaning" programs. That is asking for trouble.

You have useless "maintenance" software running and that may be causing the problems you see.

BrickMyMac was already mentioned, but you are also running Cocktail.

It may be a compatibility problem, or one of the "maintenance" software packages "cleaned" it, but OnePassword is crashing and trying to restart fairly continuously.

    Carbonate is also crashing.

You have also experienced several kernel panics. You can find them in Console, under the System Diagnostic Reports section. Click the little disclosure triangle next to System Diagnostic Reports header to show the logs in that section.

Look for the most recent whose name begins with Kernel.

You can just copy and paste into a reply everything after the Anonymous UUID line.

According to the panic log, you have Norton Anti-Use software installed. Please remove that following the developer's instructions.https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_En dUserProfile_en_us

However, three hours later, EtreCheck does not indicate it is installed. Did you uninstall between the time of the kernel panic and running EtreCheck?

As the only thing Anti-virus software is capable of finding on your Mac is ways to prevent you from using your Mac, you should remove it and test the system. If it ever told you it found something and cleaned it for you, then you may have to erase the drive and reinstall as it is more likely that it removed a legitimate file than any sort of malware.

Keep us posted if that solved anything?.

Will try the same (CleanMyMac ElCap version). also removed ESET NOD32, but not happy not being able to use proper defense systems.

Even with new, clean (no appleid linked) admin account, i still get kernel panics on reboot [launchd [eamon]].

Before resorting to format-clean reinstall will remove all 3rd-party stuff one by one....

Which means that there is something not specific to a user account that is causing the crash. This is a long thread, and not all users' problems are the same. I don't recall if you posted yours.

    Hi Luis,

Have not posted mine, but it fits the OP /thread topic. Random (or so it seems) crashes. Started only few weeks ago, some time after installing ElCap.

Now i have a colleague with MBP/Yosemity and he has had the same issue af ew times recently, which makes it even more obscure.

I have never experienced this (kernel panic) on OSX before. But i'm using my mac (late 2014 mini) to trade so can not have this to be honest.

Agreed that Norton, and perhaps CleanMyMac, are bad products, i suspect that CMM does not follow OSX guidelines on how to deal with stuff.

But ESET is a very solid, trusted product, at least the Wintel version is, have only recently started using it on osx and as it's not designed from the go for it it might have issues which i've been looking out for.

Something not specific to user account, might still be software issue though right? drivers loaded etc.

Found some virtualbox stuff loaded still even after i removed the package for instance.

fsck runs wihtout errors, so ruling out the HD. i've upgraded ram, but used correct spec stuff, not done a memcheck yet.

All users' macs are different, and so are their circumstances. Now that you mentioned you recently installed RAM on it, this is very likely suspect - and something only you knew - hence the importance of providing info in order for other people to better be able to help... :-)

If you can, try running the system without the old RAM for a while and see if the kernel panics continue to occur.

What gave you the impression that programs that can damage the OS by deleting system files and programs that serve absolutely no purpose but to cause problems are "proper defense systems?"

I have the same problem too. Rebooting in safe mode (holding the shift key after you hear the chime) usually fixes it for a while, but it always comes back. Totally unexpected. I have the suspicion that it may be font-related, but I am using the lates version of Suitcase Fusion to manage the fonts. After the crashes the program keeps giving me errores and won't start up – but this may also be due to the unexpected crash.

Firefoz is also working very poorly and crahes repeatadly on El Capitan when it never did that before.

i'm talking network security here, not about norton or cleanmymac, which came as a part of a package deal btw.
