Oct 5, 2015 8:51 AM in response to capercailzieby Jason L,Hi there capercailzie,
The article below provides some general troubleshooting tips that may help you resolve the issue with your USB device not working as expected anymore.
OS X El Capitan: Check your device’s USB connection
Ciao.

Oct 5, 2015 11:05 AM in response to Jason Lby capercailzie,Thanks, Jason, but this didn't solve my problem. I've found other users reporting problems with USB devices and El Capitan. Perhaps the new OS means older UBS devices don't work any more. In any case, the USB switch works fine on my wife's computer which is running Mavericks.

Oct 25, 2015 4:59 PM in response to capercailzieby ELgold,Similar problem on a iMac 2012 running 10.11
Wireless mouse
Cabled generic USB keyboard
After sleep the keyboard is unresponsive. The only work-around I have found is to unplug/plug the USB connector to the iMac
The mouse is also finicky now. Scrolling does not work unless I click in the area I want to scroll.

Nov 1, 2015 6:33 AM in response to Jason Lby pwdr,Same problem for me. On one port (the rear right one on a Macbook Pro Retina 15'') I cannot use my MIDI-controller (Ableton Push) any more. Not all devices are affected by this, e.g. an external harddrive works fine.

Nov 30, 2015 2:55 AM in response to capercailzieby Sordon,Since my upgrade to OS X 10.11 (currently 10.11.1) I also have USB port problems. When I plug-in a USB stick or USB external hard drive it is recognized, at first, but does not show up in Finder. When I remove the USB device and plug it in again right away it is working.
This problem have also two other colleagues, therefore I do not think that it is specific to my MacBook Pro Retina, Mid 2014.

Dec 8, 2015 8:46 AM in response to Sordonby jminassian,Hi!
Since my upgrade to El Capitan, I'm facing same/similar issue Sordon details.
I need to "plug-unplug-plug" any of my USB devices (Flash memories, Hard disks, DVD/CD drivers, Guitar interfaces, USB headphnes, etc etc) in order "Mr
El Capitan" recognizes them and let them be used.
My MBP is a Retina, 13-inch, late 2013.

Dec 8, 2015 12:46 PM in response to capercailzieby Sordon,I updated today to El Capitan version 10.11.2. First preliminary tests with an USB stick show that the USB stick works again right away. No need to plug in, plug out and plug in again.

Dec 21, 2015 4:32 PM in response to capercailzieby wetpaint,Upgraded to OSX 10.11.2 this morning now I only have 2 out of 4 functioning USB ports. Everything was working fine before this on my 2010 iMac.

Jan 12, 2016 2:56 PM in response to wetpaintby Jim Wainscott,After upgrading to 11.0 then 11.2, in both cases, the front USB port is sluggish in data transfer. What once took only a few seconds in Snow Leopard now takes roughly 2 hours. I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Mavericks, Yosemite, and El Capitan on my Mid Summer 2010 Mac Pro.

Jan 14, 2016 4:47 AM in response to capercailzieby Sordon,I reported a preliminary success with my USB problem after updating to 10.11.2. Current state is that the problem that I have to reconnect a USB device twice to get it working still persists. Please Apple fix this first and do not add new features like Life Photos that will come with the next version of El Capitan.

Jan 14, 2016 6:00 AM in response to Sordonby JimmyCMPIT,1) Apple does watch this forum. You need to go here to contact them
www.apple.com/feedback
2) If this is an issue with and music sw/hw I'll share with you some info I came across with Line 6 as to why my HW did not work with 10.11. A blog from one of the SW devs at Line 6 responded to another user they were "Working with Apple" on a fix for the issues inherent to 10.11 but after the 10.11.2 update the situation "was better, but not satisfactory" which if this has any truth to it might explain why there are a number of posts in the El Cap forums with issues relating to various music and recording sw/hw issues (both Apple and 3rd Party) and sporadic resolve if any.
So the whole "developers had months" response that can apply in many cased may not apply in this one if Apple is seeding 10.11 music tools that are borked to begin with.
