Q: Why do I have to enter payment info when downloading a free app?

When I try to download a free app, I am asked to enter payment info.  Why do you need payment info when I am downloading a free app?

    It's just the way apple made it work.  When you download an app, it goes the same steps every time.  I doesn't take into account the price of the app.

    It is recorded as a purchase at no charge for accounting reasons. A receipt is sent to the email address for your iTunes account with the name of the app at $0, and the app is included with the purchase history for your iTunes account even though the app is free. This is recorded as a download for the app developer's records, and for Apple's records. Apple doesn't charge the app developer anything for hosting and distributing a free app but download records must be kept. Some free apps also include an in-app purchase.
