Apple Article to reset the password for 10.6.8 and earlier, and 10.7 and later
If you are able to command-R to reboot the Mac into restore mode, then it is running 10.7 or later. It may still be doing so if you remember installing an operating system from the App Store, or you bought the machine new and it did not come with any discs. If you bought it used, you should try to make sure it comes with original discs. Note:
MacBook Airs older than July 22, 2011
MacBook Pros older than October 24, 2011
MacBook with no name after the MacBook name older than 2015
All have original discs, and can boot from 10.6.8 or earlier. Call AppleCare for the original discs if they are missing.
Once you are able to boot the operating system, you can use this tip to find where to post in the future by going to Apple menu -> About This Mac.
