Q: Stand ring not increasing correctly

Today is my first day using Apple Watch, and two times it reminded me to stand up.  So I did.  I walked around for at least 3 minutes. Yet both those hours show up as dark in the stand graph, and I did not get "credit" for them.

Then there was another hour when I was standing/walking for the first half hour.  Then I was in the car, then I was sitting on the couch.  I did not get credit for that hour either.  I thought you only had to stand for one minute out of sixty?!  Or is it one SPECIFIC minute?  It seems to remind me at X:50.  Does it not matter if I was standing from X:01-X:49, if I was not standing for X:50??

Is there a sensitivity/calibration issue?  How does it now if I'm standing?  If I just stand up but don't move, will it know? Or do I need to walk around?

Last question: my stand graph shows blue bars for each hour.  A bright bar if I stood up.  But then there are TWO other colors.  One is solid black.  One is a very faint blue.  Like a shadow.  I thought there was just bright and dark- but now there's this third color. What does that mean?  This seems to imply that I sat still from 1-3 and then 7-9, but that's not true. And why is 7-8 different?

Probably should have mentioned Active Calories and Minutes are counting just not the stand part of the activity app

Just want to add that this happens to me too, pretty much every time. For me I can be walking around from 12:30 - 12:45, sit down and be notified at 12:50 that I need to stand for the hour. It really seems like it should be smarter than that.

Now at 12:50 when it tells me to stand (for no reason) and I do stand up, it does register it as long as I stand for 45-60 seconds.

It's happening to me too.  I've just noticed that it doesn't seem to be aware of the fact that another hour has passed by.  There was no notification to stand, but I did so anyway.

The stand count remained the same, and an hour later it still says that I haven't missed any stand opportunities.

It was working fine today (after resetting last night), until I walked far enough away from my phone that the phone said it had lost the connection.

I'm wondering if the stand portion of the activity app calls for the time from your iPhone rather than the watch.

Were you swinging your arms? The Watch doesn't have GPS, so it relies on an accelerometer to measure the swing of your arm. Due to this, simply swinging your arm counts as walking and running.

    Ben,

You are correct it should not be that complicated.  The point is that it isn't working.  It appears that it only registers if you respond to the prod to stand at 50 minutes past the hour.  It does not credit standing "anytime in an hour" and it doesn't even register when you do stand and move around after being prodded to do so at 50 minutes past the hour.  The people here are not idiots as you imply, its not working properly for many and probably most.

After repeated problems, my last reset (press and hold the crown and the button together), it has been working flawlessly for a couple of days.

Whatever the issue is, it is finicky and will most likely be fixed with 2.0

Also acting up for me. I'm roasting a chicken, running around the kitchen like said chicken with my head cut off for the past hour. At 6:50 it tells me to stand. Are you kidding me? I did, walked around for yet another minute, but it didn't give me credit. Something's wrong. Highly annoying. And yes, I have Watch 2.0 OS.

How does the watch actually measure stand time? Put on my watch at 06:45 this morning, 1,5 hours later the watch claims that I have been standing for 3 hours! I checked that all the counters were at zero when I put on the watch.

The hourly Stand goal is achieved when you stand up and move around for at least one minute during any given hour of the day (eg 6.00 - 7.00am, 7.00 - 8.00 am, etc).

On that basis, a 1.5 hour period starting at xx.45 can span three separate hours of the day.

I see. I thought the watch measured the actual time I was standing upright. That's why it seemed impossible to achieve a three hour standing time in a 1.5 hour time span. Maybe Apple should have changed the counter to number of times you stand up, instead of hours. That way there would be no misunderstandings.

The purpose of the Stand goal is to encourage you to stand up and move around a bit for at least 1 minute during 12 different hours in the day.

The Stand ring shows your progress accordingly.

I see. I thought the watch measured the actual time I was standing upright.

And standing upright alone will not suffice. The name is misleading.  You really have to move around.

For example,  standing for two hours at a speaker's desk and giving a presentation did not advance the stand ring one bit today for me.

Has anyone found a way to fix the stand data after the fact?  Can I add a data point manually to the Health app to fix it, say, if I took off my watch for an hour to mow the lawn so was obviously standing?

    Hi

It is not presently possible to add Stand data manually.

If you would like to suggest that Apple considers adding that capability, you can do so here:

Well, that's... crap.  Just got my watch yesterday & thought, oh boy, I stand ALL DAY, I should have no problem reaching the Stand Goal.  Wrong!  It didn't register at all.  That's just bull.  They should either change the name or add some features to make it register when you're actually standing.
