Q: can i use my macbook as a trusted device

Trying to determine why my macbook doesn't show up as a trusted device, and how to make it one, if possible.

MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2012), iOS 9.2, iCloud trusted devices

    I read the associated articles.

Have you actually tried to do this?

Because my device shows up, but not as a trusted device,

nor is there the opportunity to add it.

I don't think it's available on the macbook.

It appears available on iPhones and iPads, but not MacBooks.

If I am mistaken, I would appreciate being directed to a useful page,

not to the generic pages which don't provide the answer I'm looking for thanks.

The second link previously provided included:

A trusted device is a device you control that can receive 4-digit verification codes using either SMS or Find My iPhone. You're required to provide at least one SMS capable phone number.

Thus, it appears you must have an iPhone as a trusted device and then you can add a device that does not receive SMS messages.

What software are you running on your MacBook? What exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to set up two-step verification or are you simply trying to authorize your computer in iTunes? Please add as much info about what it is you are trying to do and what you have done so far.

Per below article, they will show up in the Apple ID site as trusted if the device is signed into the correct Apple ID. But what allows them to show up is dependent on the version of iOS or OS X you are using:

iOS 9 or OS X El Capitan

Devices with iOS 9 or OS X El Capitan will appear in the device list if you're signed in to iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, the App and iTunes Stores, or Game Center on the device. You can also see your paired Apple Watch.

iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite

Devices running iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite will appear in the device list only if you're signed in to iCloud with your Apple ID. You can also see your paired Apple Watch.

iOS 7 or OS X Mavericks and earlier

To see any devices running iOS 7 or OS X Mavericks or earlier, you need to be signed in to iCloud on the device and you need Find My iPhone turned on.

So make sure all of your devices are signed into the same Apple ID

There is a difference between a recognized device and a trusted device. Although I had 'find my phone' activated on my macbook,I didn't realize that I had location services turned off on my macbook, which is why it did not show up as a trusted device, while showing up as a recognized device. So the answer was simple. That piece of information was missing, I believe from the faqs pages.

I have Find my Mac turned on, location services turned on, same Apple ID.  It still does not show up as a trusted device.  The Mac is capable of recieving texts, and notificiations from apple such as verification codes.  It should show up a s a trusted device.  CAn't figure out why it isn't.
