Q: Is it possible to move the dock to the "start" position in El Capitan?

I would like the dock to appear in the upper left corner of my screen. I already have the dock on the left but I would like to move it upward in the corner (the start position). This could be accomplished in previous version of OS X with a terminal command line or something like tinker tool. I cannot seem to get it to work in 10.11.2. I have tried the command line "defaults write com.apple.dock pinning start" and "defaults write com.apple.dock pinning -string start" ending both with a killall Dock command. Am I missing something?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

What you want is not possible.  The dock can either be at the left side of the screen, the right side of the screen, or the bottom of the screen.  That is all.

So they just removed that ability all together with the release of El Capitan? Well...I guess I can only hope they put it back in the next release. Thank you for your fast replay and input.

It was never a feature that I was aware of, and I've used every operating system since Snow Leopard (10.6.x).  If you want to leave Apple feedback about that, go here --> http://www.apple.com/feedback.  They won't respond personally, but if enough people send feedback about it, it could be something that becomes possible in a later update.  That's really all you can do, I'm afraid.

I've successfully done it in multiple iterations in the past. I have changed the way I use the dock over the years and have found it to be the solution I need at this time in life. I don't remember being able to do it in tiger or leopard but I know it was possible in snow leopard through mountain lion. I disabled during mountain lion and haven't tried since. According to tinker tool's website the feature has not been available since Mavericks. I can only assume apple removed it during the release of Yosemite.

You could always get a 3rd party dock utility, such as DragThing.com

It doesn't seem to have any updates for a few years, but it is still working on my El Capitan systems.

You could search for "dock" in the App Store to see what else is available.

There are certain things you can no longer get to due to the new SIP feature in El Capitan; I don't know if your system hack would be affected:
