Q: Actual partial account number appearing on Apple Pay transaction receipts

Hello,

I am an Apple Pay user and as a merchant I now accept Apple Pay.

I was under the understanding that Apple Pay does not expose the customers actual

credit card number to the merchant.

Well this seems to not be the case.

I use the SQUAREUP Register App to accept Apple Pay transactions and in the

receipt (email) I send to customers via the App there is the last 4 digits of the real credit card

(not device number) and in my transaction long in the Square Register App I see

the last four digits of the real credit cards.

I have to believe I either don't understand the concept of not exposing credit card account

numbers or Apple is exposing at least the last 4 digits of real credit cards used in Apple Pay

transactions to the merchant.

Any insight appreciated.

    Hi

When a customer makes a payment via Apple Pay, neither Apple nor their device sends their actual card number via the merchant's payment terminal.

Your app may be showing the last 4 digits of the Device Account Number, whilst describing it as a card number.

    Definitely not the case.

After a customer questioned the fact she was seeing the last four digits of her REAL Account

in her receipt I checked my transaction log and it was also displaying real account numbers.

Yes the last four digits of her real account and device account number are different.

I have tested several times using several of my credit cards registered to Apple Pay in my Watch and iPhone.

In these tests I am the merchant and customer if that makes sense.

In all cases the last four digits of my REAL Credit card are displayed in the transaction receipt and

also in the transaction log in the Square Register App.

These have all been contactless transactions not In App transactions.

If Square is able to display these numbers it tells me that Apple is making them available

to Square which in my understanding should not be done.

The only thing I can think of is as part of the acknowlegment from the credit card company

the real credit card number is coming back from the bank after it matched the encrypted

device account number with the real account at the bank/credit card company.

Presumably you're not getting the full credit card number. The four digits in the email receipt you send to your customers will let them cross check against their credit/debit card statements without having to perform their own conversion from the device account number which I, for one, haven't so far needed to use for anything. I suspect this is as it is meant to be, but is somewhat confusing given the idea that ApplePay doesn't use your card number.
