Q: HP Officejet 7310xi won't scan to one of my Macs

I have been having a problem I am not able to solve when trying to scan from my HP Officejet 7310XI all in one to my iMac using the Preview application.  My iMac simply will not see the scanner.  I had this problem with my previous iMac (RIP) and now with my brand new one i have the problem as well.  I have absolutely no problem using the scanner from my MacBook Pro however.  The iMac is running the latest version of El Capitan and the MacBook Pro is running the latest version of Yosemite.  I had this problem on my previous iMac as well in the end no matter which version of the OS it was on meaning it was happening when it was running on Yosemite as well.  Any ideas?  I reinstalling drivers and such.

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

    1. First Reset Printing System per the link and then re-install. If that does not work follow step 2.
    2. Check with HP and see if they still support the device under El Capitan.
    3. If not supported by HP then you may have to look for an alternate scanning app such as VueScan (Google it). Your device is about 10 years old so I'm pretty sure HP has dropped support for it.

I've done all that.  The iMac sees it as a printer, but it just doesn't see it as a scanner.  The MacBook Pro sees it as both.  It is just wierd.  even when the iMac was on the previous OS it didn't see the printer as as scanner too.  I've even tried plugging it in via USB to re-add it and it doesn't see it when doing a search.  I have to manually add it via its network address...

I have installed all of the latest software.  HP says to use the drivers that came with my OS.  Which is what I did.

I downloaded Viewscan, it does not see a scanner attached to the network.  It is like the iMac doesn't see the device as a scanner.  The MacBook sees the device as a scanner.  It is uncanny.

As den.thed suggested,  please use the Image Capture app and see if the device is seen. If you were using HP's app for scanning that is likely your problem

I've been using the Preview Application.  It does not see the scanner on my iMac.  I opened the Image Capture application.  It does not see the scanner on my iMac.  Both of the application see the scanner on my laptop.  The iMac is physically connected to a router using ethernet, my TimeCapsule, which it incidentally does not see using wifi, my MacBook see's it using wifi.  I've tried everything that comes to mind.  I turned off the wifi to make sure I'm connected to the internet when clicking the "reply" button below.  EDIT - I'm connected to the internet using ethernet so it see's the time capsule in that capacity, it does not as a time machine though.

Image Capture will look like this, please look again. Try to connect the scanner via USB to the iMac.

I have connected it via USB.  It does not see it as a scanner!  It only sees it as a printer!

Well it appears HP has dropped support. I did check with Hamrick, the developers of ViewScan. They produce a driver for the OfficeJet 7300 series of scanner, that is what your device is. Back when your device was released I worked for HP, I know your device was originally purchased from Costco hence the OfficeJet 7310XI name. Contact Hamrick and confirm if you like but I know that driver will work on your  device.

Here is the direct link to the driver from Hamrick. It won't due you any good without the application but you can see from the visual that it matches your device:
