There may be some settings in regard to the remote (I've no experience with using) in OS X.

A search may bring up similar or somewhat the same kind of topic, though your situation
may be unique and have another cause than others you could find online via a search.
While the battery would be a first thing to check, the remote itself may be failing. Or you
may have to see if a reset of SMC could help whatever part in the computer it works with.

Another reset that may or may not have anything to do with the receiver in the Mac, is this:

If your computer is still covered under an AppleCare agreement, you could have the unit
tested & inspected to see if there's anything wrong; and get it fixed. An Apple Store with
Genius bar should be able to (if you contact them ahead for suitable appointment time)
check and test the computer and the remote to see which item is the problem. Genius:

While the least costly, if defective, is the battery; then the remote. To troubleshoot try all.
