Q: Just bought a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display. What are some tips you guys have for me to make this thing last? This is my first MacBook.

I just bought a brand new 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display (no, I didn't want to wait for the new 2016 release). This is my first MacBook.

I'm seeking advice on what I can do to make this last as long as possible. Do you guys have any tips for me from knowledge or past experiences? It will be greatly appreciated!

Don't drink near it.  A spill will ruin the MBP and will not be covered by the warranty.

Treat the battery using these Apple instructions:

Use the battery as you need ... on battery for portable use or mostly-plugged in if is it mobile at the time.  We cannot judge.  Just do not run it dead.

I use a BT keyboard and BT trackpad so most activity that *could* involve fluids or accidental impacts can only harm those.  Granted these cost $230 for the pair, but it saves the core system from repairs.

Keep good backups.  Macs generally do not fail, but the storage on the new systems is an SSD on an internal card, not a removable drive.  Complete failure under warranty will probably get you a replacement system and *you* are responsible for keeping copies of your current data/software-install non-OSX-software.  I use CarbonCopyClone ($40, bombich.com) and have an external enclosure that I can swap 2.5 in disks for multiple backups.

Buy AppleCare within 1 year of purchase of the system.  Macs do not generally fail (my 2011 still runs strong), but bad parts do sometimes get through.

Do not install "system cleaners" or "defragmenter" software.  OSX takes care of itself very well.  Ask us here for any software you think you might want to use but are not sure is safe ... we prefer to warn instead of telling how to fix.

<EDIT> Apple will always give you a system with a functional OSX after a repair, but software you installed after initial-load and data you added is your responsibility.
