Jan 17, 2016 9:13 AM in response to mcinmeby AJ397,That message refers to the iTunes on your computer. Get the latest version of iTunes - Apple Support
It is possible that you have the latest version of iTunes that your computer OS supports, but not what iOS 9 requires. I believe iOS 9 requires iTunes 12.3.x.

You do not have iTunes on your iPhone. You have iTunes Store.

Jan 17, 2016 9:58 AM in response to AJ397by mcinme,Thanks for the info! I just went and installed what it said was the most current version (iTunes 11.4 for OS X 10.6), rebooted my Mac and got the same message when I plugged my phone in. Is it possible that I need to upgrade the operating system on my Mac to get iTunes12.3?

Jan 17, 2016 10:04 AM in response to mcinmeby AJ397,Yes, you would need to update your Macs OS to download the newest version of iTunes. The requirements are listed as OS X 10.8.5.or later. (Some features will require an even never OS) Download iTunes 12.3.2

Jan 17, 2016 11:17 AM in response to AJ397by mcinme,You've been very helpful, I really appreciate it! I've been trying to upgrade, but it's telling me that I need to buy OS X Mountain Lion in order to go to 10.8.5 or later. Before I spend the money, do you agree with this step? Sorry about my lack of tech knowledge

Jan 17, 2016 11:32 AM in response to mcinmeby AJ397,I would post a new question about updating. I am not familiar with the older OS's and don't want to give you wrong information.

Jan 17, 2016 12:01 PM in response to mcinmeby LACAllen,Post details about your Mac.
Go to your Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen... About This Mac. there should be something along the lines of late 2009 or something like that.

Jan 17, 2016 3:26 PM in response to LACAllenby mcinme,It doesn't have a date other than "TM and Copyright 1983-2011 Apple Inc" The remaining info is the Processor, Memory and Startup Disk. Even if I click on More Info... there are no dates in there either. That said, all indications point to me buying this in early-mid 2009. Through googling, I think i have determined that I need to buy OS X Mountain Lion to get the upgrades. If you have more info on this, I'd gladly take it!

Jan 17, 2016 4:16 PM in response to mcinmeby AJ397,If you go to "About this Mac" and then "more info" the overview pane should list the iMac's year. You can also find the model using the serial number: Identify the model of your iMac - Apple Support and Find your Mac's serial number in About This Mac or System Information - Apple Support.
If you need help updating or checking compatibility please post a new question in the Mountain Lion (or your current OS) area of the forum. Include relevant information such as your current OS and iMac specs. -AJ
