How can I connect a PS3/PS4 to an iMac 21.5 inch mid 2014?

I have tried connecting my PS4 to my iMac with an HDMI to mini display cable for the thunderbolt but it does not seem to work.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

you can't using the thunderbolt adaptor

it require the device in the other end to support target display mode read more here https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592

you may be able to do it with some sort of usb tvtuner screen capture device if it support hdmi input and then use it's software in full screen

how I sort of do it is my 21" mid 2011 is connected using a tb to dvi to my 27" asus monitor and my xbone is connected to the same monitors hdmi 2 connector then I can change between what the 27" display xbone or iMac, and then i use bootcamp for when I want to game windows stuff, that setup would of cause work as well with a playstation but of cause it also would require another monitor which is something it seems you would wish to do without
