    1. Click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.

    2. After #1, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.


    Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first; you should also install more RAM in it.

    Note also Lion 10.7 is not the "latest" version but it is the last version your computer will run.  It is still 4 major versions behind the current latest which means a lot of newer software will not run on it, particularly the latest iTunes required for syncing iOS devices.
