I have recently searched for this answer. Turns out its actually easier than I thought! I'm just gonna list the steps.
• Open Photos
• Highlight the album group of photos you want to play in your slideshow.
• Click the + button on the top right of the toolbar
• Name your slideshow, then click OK
• Click on the Stopwatch icon on the right side of the Photos window
• Make sure that the box next to "Transition" is checked
• Slide the speed tab left or right to decrease or increase speed.
• Click play.... Voila! -
Jan 18, 2016 8:44 AM in response to AiEntertainmentby D_M_R,Thanks for posting this info. really helpful since the new Photos facilities are completely non-intuitive and roundabout. The options in iPhoto were much better and easier to use.
OSX seems to going the way of Windows - every new version creates different ways of doing things just for the sake of change.
New features are always welcome but changing access methodologies of old features is really stupid and counter-productive especially when they lose simplicity.

Jan 18, 2016 9:30 AM in response to Dennis Langlois1by Old Toad,We're no longer able to set the slide duration on a per slide basis. We can only change the entire length of the slideshow which would be equally divided between all of the slides.
Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

Aug 3, 2016 3:53 AM in response to Old Toadby RDRDFSK,In Photos 1.5 I can adjust the time of individual slides, by picking a single photo and clicking the "Play Selected for" button shown in your screenshot.
What I can't do but others say is possible, is set different transitions for different slides. If I change a single slide it changes all. I wonder if you are seeing the same problem, i.e. trying to apply an option to one but it applies to all?
I also fully agree with D_M_R the dumbing down of many apps and the lack of intuitive interface that seems enf=demic across recent Apple apps iOS worrying. As is the poor choices of Interface design, The slide show controls being a good example with small, pale grey icons on a white background.
