iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) - Technical Specifications
Adding RAM is completely independent of your hard drive. So nothing should be lost. But making a backup before making any alterations to a computer is always highly recommended.
Recommended sources of RAM for Macs are Crucial and OWC(Mac Sales);

Jan 18, 2016 3:10 PM in response to lroughton1124by Mike Sombrio,★HelpfulI too have a late 2009 27" iMac and am running 16Gb of ram. It works great. Make sure you use quality ram like that from either OWC or Crucial. Your slow down could be caused by low ram but depending on what you do Lion generally runs ok with 4Gb. Maybe run and post an EtreCheck report so we can see if there are any other obvious causes http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Jan 18, 2016 5:30 PM in response to lroughton1124by Phil0124,Depends on whether the slowdown is caused by lack of RAM or something else.
You can check Activity Monitor
Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support
If your RAM pressure is yellow or Red, and there's a lot of Swap used,, more RAM will help things.
If its green, with little swap used, then it probably won't do much.
You can also Download and run Etrecheck, and post the report here so we may see what else may causing the slowdowns.
