I need to find some sort of solution that's not one of the obvious tutorials - I've been through all of those. I appreciate the help!

Jan 19, 2016 3:57 PM in response to cwtfromsandyspringsby OGELTHORPE,Your MBP came with Leopard (10.t5) OSX installation disks. It is too old for the recovery partition and Internet recovery.
The Snow Leopard retail disk, white in color, should be capable of erasing the HDD but it appears that the DVD drive is either faulty or needs a lens cleaning. Try a lens cleaning DVD. It is also possible that the disk is faulty.
You can also use Target Disk mode if you have access to another Mac:

You can then erase the disk using Disk Utility>Erase.
