Q: Help with wiping an old 2008 MacBook Pro

I've been all across the forums trying to figure out the best way to wipe an old 2008 era MacBook Pro so that I can donate it.  It's currently running OS X 10.6.8. I tried the Command+R per some of the tutorials, but to no avail.  I then read on these older versions, you need to use the start up DVD.  I did purchase (a few years ago) the Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.3) DVD  and I've tried using it as well - holding down "C" upon start up, and also holding down the "Option" key - it just spins and then ejects the disc.  At the end of the day, even if this has no value to anyone and has to go to a trash heap, I still want to wipe the data...any other suggestions?  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
