Q: Text message notifications on iOS 9 not recognising contacts

Since upgrading to iOS 9, any text message notifications seem to appear with the number rather than a contact name, but if i open the message app they are listed against the correct contact name.

This means that no custom text notifications are working either as the notification doesn't seem to be able to link the number to the contact record. It seems to work for iMessage, but anything sent as a normal text comes through as a number not the stored contact. I've tried the usual - reboot, switching off dial assist etc, but none of that has made a difference. I've also tried making sure the contact record has the same format as the number showing in the notification (e.g. with +44 in front) but that hasn't helped either.  Can anyone help?

Same problem here (iPhone 6 on EE).

Have Apple even acknowledged the problem?

Apple does know about this issue.  I have dealt with a support person and I feel for anyone more dependent on sms/iMessage than other messaging apps like whatsapp and Facebook messenger.  I'm disappointed 9.2.1 doesn't solve the problem from the looks of things. With that said there is a work around.  It's not easy to perform as it requires you to direct problem contacts to send you messages appropriately to eliminate the issue.  Look on this other thread for details - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7222994?start=30&tstart=0

I do recommend if you are experiencing issue to not just vocalise on the forum.  Raise the issue to Apple as a support issue/bug.  It's the only way to ensure the bug fix is prioritised.  As much noise as this may be in this channel, prioritisation usually happens by more formal channels unless something is causing lots of noise.  It seems this isn't causing noise for everyone.

I can confirm that 9.2.1 does not fix this for me.  Cheers for the link to the other thread - I'll take a look.

    YES!

The restart method jamenc posted on the other thread worked for me on iPhone 6 iOS9.2

Obvs different things seem to be working for different people but its defintely worth giving this a shot.

That's great news.  For clarity, does the person sending the message have to be someone whose contact you are having a problem with?

Oh, and will this fix it for all senders if I do it with one person?

OK, here's my experience.  I did it with by sending a message from my work phone to my iPhone and...IT FIXED IT.  But it was only fixed for that number.  I tried with another sender and the problem was still there.  So it's a kind of fix, but it needs to be done on a per-number basis it seems.

I've now gone through these steps several times with different contacts and can confirm that they work, but only on a per-contact basis.

    1. Send a message to a broken contact asking them to reply
    2. Reset your phone using the power and home buttons
    3. Wait...
    4. You will get a message from the broken contact and the notification will show their number
    5. Unlock your phone
    6. You should get a new notification with the contact name
    7. Repeat the process for every broken contact

This is a slight refinement of the instructions here: Contact name missing from text message since iOS 9 upgrade

Credit where it's due for whoever found that fix.  It's a beauty.

The bottom line is that you need to do this for every single broken contact.  I have 300+ contacts so it doesn't bear thinking about going through all of them, but I will pick some key, regular contacts and run the fix with them.  I'll also report the bug again with this updated info.

    Great stuff!

It doesn't affect too many of my regular contacts, so ill prob deal with the others as they pop up.

This is outrageous, right?! I read all these comments and stories from Apple sales reps.... it's all BS. This has got nothing to do with the network operator, nor with the iPhone model. This is purely a software bug and it is such an embarrassing bug apple does seem to look the other way rather than acknowledging it and fixing it. Seriously guys, ***?! They are selling devices which cost $$$$$ and this kind of issue is happening ????? And it's not being addressed? Or if it is being addressed, no-one is communicating it. Resolving this should be at the top (do you hear me, AT THE TOP) of your todo list. A £500+ pound telephone is not capable of showing a stored contact's name when a text is received, this is ridiculous! Please get this fixed ASAP.

    Thanks

I have the very same problem with an iPhone 6 running 9.21.1 on EE. Is it a coincidence that around the same time my phone started doing this my Messages app on my Mac (OSX 10.11.1) started doing the same thing - no contact names against messages, so maybe not a phone or IOS issue but an iCloud contacts issue?

That worked! In fact the phone doesn't need a hard reboot, you just need to have the text(s) waiting for delivery whilst your phone is powered fully off. You can do multiple contacts during one reboot.

So text all your friends you're buying the beers down the pub and quickly turn your phone off! :-) Once all the replies pile up asking about which pub, turn your phone back on and celebrate the fix!

    This is utter insanity.

50 THOUSAND views of just this thread over FIVE months and still nothing from Apple. Ridiculous. This is so obviously some kind of software glitch, FIX IT ALREADY APPLE, get it together.

Steve Jobs would've torn someone's head clean off their body by now.
