Q: Battery top Up - effect on battery life

So battery life is not initially as bas as dreaded but rarely fits a pattern of exactly 24/48 hours so I often need to 'top up' the battery.

In the old days this was bad for rechargeable batteries but my question is - Is there any harm to the battery caused by topping off the charge for 30 - 60 mins when convenient ?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Dave

    The battery will not suffer any harm from regular charging, regardless of the charge level when charging begins. Apple Watch uses Lithium-ion batteries, which can be charged whenever you want. There is no need to let the battery discharge fully before recharging it.

    You may find it most convenient to charge your watch overnight. Under normal operation, Apple Watch cannot be overcharged and the battery will not suffer any harm from regular overnight charging. Charging will stop automatically when the watch is fully charged (and recommence as / when required due to ongoing battery usage). Follow Apple's safety and handling instructions and also note that:

    - It is not possible to turn the watch off whilst it is on the charger and connected to power - this is normal.

    - It is also normal for your watch, power adapter and charging cable to become warm when connected to power.

    You may also wish to use Nightstand mode. Whilst your watch is charging, this mode enables it to be used as a beside clock with optional alarm:

    • To check that the option is enabled: on your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to My Watch (tab) > General > scroll down to Nightstand Mode.
    • Connect your watch to its charger (with power connected) or connect it to an Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock:
      • Place your watch on its side with the buttons facing up.
    • To see the time, tap the display or lightly nudge your watch:
      • By design, when your watch is in this mode, even nudging your bedside table may be sufficient.
    • If you also set an alarm using the Alarm Clock app on your watch, it will alert you at the specified time.

    The battery in Apple Watch is designed to retain up to 80% of the initial capacity after 1,000 completed charging cycles.

    Charging cycles work on a cumulative basis. For example, one charging cycle would be completed after:

    - Two charges to full, each starting from 50%, or;

    - One charge to full from a starting level of 80% plus one charge to full starting from 20%, or;

    - Four charges to full, each from a starting level of 75%.

    The TL;DR is: charge your Apple Watch (or iPhone or iPad) when ever you need to or want to. You won't hurt the battery.

    Best of luck.
