I think if it were a very common issue (and one subject to special notice) we'd see a lot more posts about it here, so I am thinking there's no real point in reporting it to Apple, particularly since there isn't even any possibility of warranty replacement.

Odd enough I have seen quite a few video's on youtube telling how to repair a broken cord, some describing the same reason for failure. Having said that, I need to correct my previous statement; the power cord started melting at approximately 5cm from the adapter and not near the connector.
Despite the end of warranty I'd think that Apple would be keen on becoming aware of 'thermal events' which can cause different implications than only having a defective, not functioning product. After all, the adapter is still a current product.
